For Tom Holland’s Spider-Man to come into his own as a superhero after the release of the MCU's untitled Spider-Man 3 film, he may need Sony’s Spiderverse more than the MCU. While Holland’s Spider-Man was introduced into the MCU as Tony Stark’s (Robert Downey Jr.) ward and an Avenger-in-training within Captain America: Civil War, Spider-Man’s comic book origins suggest the hero isn't inherently a figure best suited for teams. The same can be said for past Sony film adaptations, as Sam Raimi’s Spider-Man trilogy and Marc Webb's The Amazing Spiderman series have traditionally portrayed the web-slinging hero as a solo act. In order for the character to grow from an Avenger’s sidekick into a fully-fledged superhero, Holland’s Spider-Man might benefit by returning to his own solo universe within Sony’s Spiderverse.
Spider-Man’s exit from the MCU was a very real possibility back in 2019, when Sony Pictures Entertainment and Walt Disney Studios struggled to reach a profit-sharing deal regarding a third Spider-Man: Homecoming movie. But the two studios eventually came to an agreement in which Disney would co-finance 25% of the cost of the film, in exchange for 25% of the profits. After reaching the agreement with Sony, the president of Marvel Studios Kevin Feige said in a statement that Spider-Man “happens to be the only hero with the superpower to cross cinematic universes, so as Sony continues to develop their own Spidey-verse you never know what surprises the future might hold.” If Sony were to eventually transition Holland’s Spider-Man into their own Spiderverse - as had initially been planned if the deal with Disney fell through - it could prove to be the best option for the character’s future development.
As long as Holland’s Spider-Man stays in the MCU, the character will never be able to stand on his own. In every appearance that Holland’s Spider-Man makes throughout the MCU, he’s always received assistance from other heroes or has been impacted by the MCU at large. In Homecoming, Parker began his mentorship with Tony Stark in earnest and struggled to find his footing as a superhero without Stark’s help. In Captain America: Civil War and Avengers: Infinity War, Spider-Man fought alongside the Avengers in large-scale conflicts. Mourning the death of his mentor Stark in Spider-Man 2: Far From Home, Parker found an unfortunate replacement in Mysterio (Jake Gyllenhaal). With Doctor Strange (Benedict Cumberbatch) set to appear in Spider-Man 3, it’s becoming almost too natural to introduce a mentor into Spider-Man’s story, causing Parker’s growth to become stunted by the MCU’s shadow.
By transitioning from the MCU into Sony’s Spiderverse, the iconic character would be placed back into his own universe, freeing up the plot to be centered more on Parker’s conflicts alone. Since the MCU has loftier goals that expand outside the scope of Spider-Man’s universe, it raises the concern that Peter Parker will become overshadowed, which could already be the case within the MCU’s untitled Spider-Man 3 film. With Jamie Foxx reprising his role as Electro from The Amazing Spiderman 2, the possibility of Doctor Strange introducing the multiverse, and the unconfirmed rumors that past Spider-Man actors Tobey Maguire and Andrew Garfield will be coming back to the franchise, Spider-Man 3 has the potential to be overstuffed with so many leading characters that it draws focus away from Holland’s Spider-Man, despite the fact that he's the titular character.
Alternatively, Spider-Man 3 might still have the potential to make Holland’s Spider-Man his own man within the MCU. At the end of Far From Home, a cliff hanger shows that Mysterio leaked Spider-Man’s true identity to the media, making it the first time in the MCU when Parker’s personal life is at risk. With the expectation that villains will begin to target his loved ones within Spider-Man 3, it feels reminiscent of the personal struggles previously featured in Sam Raimi’s Spider-Man trilogy, when Parker balanced the pressures of being a superhero while trying to protect his friends and family from his second life. With this in mind, the plot of Spider-Man 3 already feels like a return to Spidey’s solo universe due to the additional personal obstacle Holland's Spider-Man will be forced to deal with alone: not only do the villains know his civil identity, but the public does as well.
