This Legend Of Zelda: Twilight Princess Speedrun Takes Over 24 Hours

In what may seem to be a contradiction of terms, there is a record-breaking speedrun of The Legend of Zelda: Twilight Princess that takes over 24 hours to complete. The Legend of Zelda series will be celebrating its 35th anniversary next year, and while Twilight Princess is often considered to one of the lesser entries to the franchise, it is still a popular game for speedrunners to tackle.

Usually when people think of a speedrun in videogames they think of, well, speed. Gamers use glitches and exploits to defy physics enabling them to jump through walls, over chasms and into areas that should not be accessed until much further through the game. It is not often that a record is broken in this style of play that actually takes longer than a standard run-through of a game. And yet, that is something that one very patient and dedicated Zelda fan has done.

Shared on the Lowest Percent YouTube channel, gymnast86 narrates a video that draws attention to a seldom run category in Twilight Princess playthroughs: the low% run. While other speedrun categories such as the 100% and Any% runs are completed as fast as possible, with records being rewarded on the quickest times to completion, the low% run rewards runs where the game is completed as fast as possible but with the least amount of items collected. The current holder for the Twilight Princess low% speedrun is a player called Anorakkis. As detailed by gymnast86, their playthrough of this Zelda title skips out on eight items within the game that Any% runs usually pick up. However, for players to miss out these items as Anorakkis does, they will need to dedicate a lot of time and patience to the cause, as these skips mean that the total time for the game to be completed takes an astounding 24 hours and 59 minutes.

This may seem bizarre, as less items would usually mean less time, but for this playthrough that is far from the case. In this instance, items are skipped through a variety of lengthy glitches and hacks. These include staring at Rupees for a mammoth 17 hours to allow Link to pass through locked gateways, as well as using a glitch that allows gamers to carry bombs from the very start, but only if they have completed a vast chunk of the playthrough already on a separate file.

Regardless of their speed (or lack of it), this is an impressive effort from Anorakkis that has been recognized by Lowest Percent and gymnast86. This "speedrun" is a true testament to the Zelda series’ ongoing popularity, even if it is a very strange one.

Speedrunning is not for everyone, as gamers must commit an immense amount of time to one game to learn its ins and outs. Then mastering the specific mechanics to exploit said game to gain the desired results takes more than just a brief whim on a rainy day. Something that is especially true if gamers are planning to complete a low% run of The Legend of Zelda: Twilight Princess.
