Ryan Reynolds reveals Alex Trebek filmed a cameo for Free Guy in a touching tribute following his passing. Over the last four decades, Trebek became one of the most recognizable and beloved figures in entertainment thanks to his role as the host of Jeopardy. Although this was his primary job since 1984, Trebek did lend his services to appearing in a few other TV shows and movies.
Trebek announced in 2019, though, that he was diagnosed with pancreatic cancer. The stage 4 cancer originally entered remission in late 2019 and allowed Trebek to return to work as the host of Jeopardy. He spent the last year filming the latest seasons of the game show amid his battle with cancer and said earlier in 2020 that he didn't have any plans of retiring soon. Unfortunately, it was announced this morning that Trebek peacefully passed away at the age of 80. The news of Trebek's death has brought millions to remember him and mourn the loss.
One movie star who shared a tribute for Alex Trebek after his passing was Ryan Reynolds. The Deadpool star praised the fellow Canadian's character in his statement that he put on Twitter. But, Reynolds also revealed that Trebek has a cameo in the upcoming movie Free Guy, which Reynolds stars in. Trebek filmed his scenes last year despite his ongoing battle with cancer at the time.
Reynolds didn't share any details about Trebek's role in Free Guy. However, this is believed to be the final role Trebek filmed outside of Jeopardy. In Trebek's acting career, he usually played himself or a random TV host, as he did in Tom Clancy's Jack Ryan, so that could provide a general idea of what Trebek will do in Free Guy. The movie takes place inside of a video game, but there will be real-world elements as well. Trebek could potentially play a TV host inside of the game who is another non-playable character, and he'll be one of many cameos in Free Guy.
Although Trebek won't have a major role in Free Guy, his appearance in the film will be more meaningful now. Trebek's cameo would've already been seen by now if the movie hadn't been delayed multiple times due to the coronavirus pandemic. Free Guy recently lost its 2020 release date, so it won't be until sometime in 2021 that Trebek's potentially final film role will be seen. The wait won't be that long to see Trebek on screen again, though. His final episodes as the host of Jeopardy will air throughout the rest of 2020, with his final episode airing on Christmas day.
