Rick Grimes Is Not In The Walking Dead: World Beyond Season 2

Despite some alluded narrative connections, Rick Grimes won’t appear in The Walking Dead: World Beyond season 2 or anytime soon. As the lead protagonist for most of the original series, Rick is as beloved of a character as The Walking Dead has ever had. After his departure from the show in season 9, fans have waited for his return to the franchise. Unfortunately, it sounds like they’ll have to keep waiting.

The Walking Dead: World Beyond is the second full spinoff series in the franchise, following in the footsteps of Fear the Walking Dead. The show takes place a full decade after the initial zombie outbreak/apocalypse and focuses on a young generation of survivors who’ve grown up in the post-walker world. CRM, the mysterious faction that saves Rick from near-death in season 9 of the original series, also plays a significant role. The show just finished its first season after beginning to air in October, and Walking Dead: World Beyond is set to only run for one more season.

The new show’s ties to CRM (The Civil Republic Military, comprised of three different settlements) and its relative concurrence with The Walking Dead season 10 has prompted speculation from fans that Rick could show up in the next season. Unfortunately, that sounds like it won’t be the case. In an interview with ComicBook, The Walking Dead chief content officer Scott Gimple was asked if an upcoming appearance from Rick is likely. His answer was definitive – "It is not.” You can read his full quote below.

"You know what? I'm very happy to say... I'm not happy to say the answer. I'm happy to be definitive with people. It is not…That's one, I don't know if people are being cagey about that. But I feel that one's important not to be cagey about. I think people could watch this show and learn a lot about the mythology that Rick Grimes is caught up in. And they might even see places where Rick Grimes has been. But yeah, he's not swinging around the corner. And I don't even know if I'm making people upset saying that, but I just don't like people watching it, sort of expecting Rick."

While hearing such a concrete denial is sure to discourage some fans, it doesn’t mean we’ve seen the last of Rick forever. AMC is still planning on producing a series of theatrical films following Rick as he continues surviving through the apocalyptic world of The Walking Dead. While details on those movies are few and far between, and the realities of the COVID-19 pandemic have put most productions on hold, it should only be a matter of time before Rick Grimes returns to the big screen.

In the meantime, there’s more than enough Walking Dead content to go around. The Walking Dead will return to finish its extended tenth season in February, and the sixth season of Fear the Walking Dead will resume after that. Both shows are well into their lifespans now though, leaving fans curious as to the direction the franchise will take in the future. In part, that’s what makes the latest spinoff so interesting. The Walking Dead: World Beyond begins production for its second season early next year.
