The Xbox Series X has launched and the PlayStation 5 is only hours away. After a pre-order fiasco that saw many fans go without a console, Sony has promised that more consoles will be available for launch, Black Friday, and beyond. So, how does one secure Sony's next (or, well, current) generation console?
In order to ensure a calm launch, and prevent unnecessary chaos during the ongoing Covid-19 pandemic, Sony has announced that all orders for PS5 must be done online. Consumers will still be able to purchase the PS5 from their store of choice, and even pick up the console in person at said retailer, but all orders must be made online.
With online orders comes a wide variety of options. Some retailers are opening up PS5 orders at 12 AM ET on launch day, while others are waiting until Black Friday to unload their stock of PlayStation 5 consoles. Then there is Best Buy, which has stated that it will have PS5s available for purchase on their website but has declined to give an exact date. Consumers will need to regularly check the website and look for announcements in order to jump on the PS5 consoles when they become available.
On launch day, there are three reputable sites from which consumers can order a PlayStation 5, apart from the official Sony site. The first is Newegg, which will have a limited supply of consoles available to purchase at 12:00 AM EST on November 12, launch day. The second is Target. It will have PS5s available on launch day but the company has not revealed the time of their availability, so start checking the page at 12:00 AM EST on November 12. Lastly, there is Walmart, and it's system is definitely the most consumer friendly. Not only will consoles become purchasable at 12 PM EST, a much kinder time, they will also be released periodically at different times throughout the day, since Walmart is selling its stock gradually rather than all at once. The times for purchase, all Eastern Time Zone, are 12 PM, 3 PM, 6 PM, and 9 PM.
For Black Friday, GameStop is the only store guaranteeing the PS5, but other retailers will probably carry the console as well. For instance, Best Buy has the console in their ads, despite their announcement concerning the console being vague. Furthermore, there are three other retailers who say they will have consoles in stock, eventually. These companies are Amazon, Sam's Club, and B&H. For these options it's best to sign up for email alerts to know when the PS5 is available. For clarity, the best places to check for PS5 orders at launch are:
- Newegg @ 12:00 AM EST on November 12th
- Target @ an unspecified time on November 12th
- Walmart @ 12 PM, 3 PM, 6 PM, and 9 PM EST on November 12th
The PlayStation 5 is nearly here and, despite recent controversies like the system's tendency to overheat, hype is at peak levels. Big exclusives such as Ratchet and Clank: Rift Apart and Horizon Forbidden West have been confirmed for 2021, other big titles are looming in the near future, and the PlayStation 5 is just getting started.
