Don't worry, Supernatural fans: Jensen Ackles is bringing one part of Dean Winchester with him when he joins The Boys. For fifteen seasons, Ackles played Dean on the WB's (and then the CW's) Supernatural. Dean was one half of the monster hunting duo at the center of the long-running series, which just came to an end last week. Supernatural's final episode proved to be polarizing among fans, but Ackles and his onscreen brother Jared Padalecki are already moving on to other television roles. While Padalecki headlines the CW's Walker, Ackles will board Supernatural creator Eric Kripke's The Boys.
Even before The Boys season 2 arrived in September, news broke that Ackles will star in season 3. He will play Soldier Boy, the original patriotic superhero. Fans of the comics The Boys is based on will know Soldier Boy as a naïve and foolish hero, but the Amazon show looks to offer a different take on him. Kripke has described him as John Wayne and has already promised the show won't include a controversial moment between him and the Seven's leader Homelander (Antony Starr). With The Boys season 3 slated to begin filming in early 2021, it might be a little while before fans get a proper look at Ackles in character.
Luckily, Ackles provided a hint about what fans can expect from Soldier Boy's appearance, and they might be pleased to know it has ties to Dean. While talking to EW, Ackles revealed that though he thought he'd put away Dean's trademark boots at the end of Supernatural, they actually followed him to his new TV role. "I somehow managed to end with the same kind of boots for Soldier Boy that I wore as Dean Winchester. Different color but same boot," Ackles shared. Even more special is the fact that Ackles chose them himself, as he had a variety of shoes to pick from.
Having spent so long playing Dean, it must feel strange to Ackles that he'll now be joining an entirely different TV show. In that sense, it's nice that he was able to take a part of Dean with him, even if it isn't necessarily an intentional homage. Soldier Boy already feels like a vastly different character than Dean, and fans should enjoy the opportunity to see Ackles play someone new. Still, if they get a glimpse at his feet, it might feel like little has changed.
The Boys season 2 ended with what felt like a victory for the titular vigilantes, but it's all but guaranteed that the sense of peace they got won't last for long. Homelander is poised to be more vicious than ever following his humiliating defeat, and there's another supe out there who has been exploding unsuspecting heads. How Soldier Boy will factor into all this remains to be seen, but many are looking forward to seeing it unravel.
