James Bond Viral Tweet Jokes MI6 Smoke Means A New 007 Was Chosen

A tweet has gone viral that jokes that the red smoke coming out of MI6 means a new 007 was chosen. Though Daniel Craig has played the role of James Bond since 2006 in Casino Royale and is returning as the character for the fifth and final time in No Time to Die, keen eyes have already studied the trailer and are suspecting that Lashana Lynch, playing Nomi in the upcoming film, will be the newest 007 agent. But Lynch, known for her role as Maria Rambeau in Marvel’s Captain Marvel, has recently declared that she doesn’t know who 007's next successor is.

Over the past few years, fans have thrown many actors into the running for the role of James Bond, most notably Idris Elba, Henry Cavill, and Tom Hardy. Barbara Broccoli, a producer for the franchise, stated that “anything was possible” when considering a non-white actor or a woman for the role, which has brought up the possibility of Charlize Theron being cast. Many fans are sure that Lynch’s Nomi will be the next 007 agent replacing James Bond but also that the name “James Bond” will be put on hold in the franchise, stopping claims that there will be a “Jane Bond”— for now.

Twitter user Jack Kirby commented on another tweet from David Henig that shows a picture of red smoke coming out of the top of British intelligence agency MI6 and states. While the red coloring might only be a trick of the light, the tweet seems to have resonated with almost 114,000 users who have since liked it.

Kirby hits a universal joke on the head, making fun of the way people create monoliths out of fictional characters but also being keenly aware of the importance of James Bond in and out of Britain. Using smoke as a way to announce a change or decision has been used similarly by the Vatican when the Cardinals vote in a new pope. For instance, the chimney will puff out black smoke if there hasn’t been a consensus between the voters but will shoot out white smoke when a new pope has been voted for.

This tweet is the perfect storm of comedy, showing that people find the process of choosing a new Bond to be sometimes archaic but also how important it is to a lot of people who love the franchise and the character. No Time to Die won't be coming out until April 2021, if it isn't delayed again, so the announcement of the next James Bond likely won't come for quite some time. That being said, hopefully, when the next actor is chosen, the announcement will come with as big of a display as this viral tweet.
