Netflix's latest reality show, Deaf U, has been turning heads and gaining major accolades, and some of the show's fans feel like Tessa Lewis is the "Regina George" of the school. Regina was the queen bee of the movie, Mean Girls.
Producers Nyle DiMarco and Naimah Holmes have received praise for giving viewers insight into the intricacies of deaf culture. With the raw portrayal of Gallaudet University students, Deaf U dispels any stereotypes about the lives of deaf or hard of hearing people. The students have quintessential growing up experiences just like any other college kids. Among the partying and love trials, there are cliques to contend with. Tessa Lewis is gorgeous, catty, and rarely seen without a stunning manicure. It's not surprising that she's considered the Regina George of the Deaf U cast.
Tessa is part of the "elite" crew at Gallaudet. According to the show, being "elite" in deaf culture is a very big deal. People belonging to the club come from a long line of deaf family members. Socio-economic status is important, and so is the type of education a person has had. Another thing that seems important to the "elite" crew is fluency and usage of American Sign Language (ASL). Even things like using a cochlear implant may be looked at unfavorably. When viewers first met Tessa in Deaf U season 1 episode 1, "My Left Ear is Broke as Sh**t," she said, "many people consider my family elite." Then she gave a pretty sassy shoulder shrug. She added, "my first language was ASL, my first words were signs. That puts you at a higher status here."
Of the "elite" clique, Alexa Paulay-Simmons said, "they are so quick to judge," and with regard to Tessa, she wasn't wrong. In episode 2, "I Have So Many Questions," Tessa seemed to be the queen bee in a hang out sesh, where a group of "elite" girls got together to pick on another student's YouTube channel. The girl they were scrutinizing was Cheyenna Clearbrook. Everyone in the room looked to Tessa to see how to react. Tessa said, "the way she mouths is too obvious," and all the other girls followed suit. It was very Regina George and The Plastics. In a confession scene, Tessa spoke about the video, and said, "the deaf community is so small that once we shun a person, they have nowhere else to go." Yikes, poor Cheyenna Clearbrook.
Tessa isn't just like this towards her enemies. When one of her "best friends" Alexa opens up to her about something very personal, she only seems interested in gossiping about it. She laughed at her friend and offered her absolutely no support. Later she told the production crew, "it's so exciting" to spread around stories like Alexa's. In a recent Instagram post (her account no longer accessible), Tessa said, "A little advice, always add spice 💕." It seems like this blonde beauty hasn't quite had her "piece of the [tiara] for everyone moment" yet. Hopefully, audiences will see some moral redemption for Tessa in Deaf U season 2!
