10 Quotes From Gilmore Girls: A Year In The Life That Made Us Tear Up

The CW recently broadcasted the 2016 Netflix revival of Gilmore Girls: A Year in the Life in honor of this year’s 20th anniversary of the show’s original airdate. The popular comedy-drama series is still beloved by fans of all ages even after all these years.

Because of this, viewers couldn’t wait to see what their favorite characters have been up to in Stars Hollow, Connecticut since the show’s original series finale in 2007. The revival had great moments with some memorable quotes that still make viewers tear up. It’s time to rewatch the revival and grab a box of tissues for these heartwarming lines.

10 “I Don’t Know How To Do It. Live My Life.”

When it was announced that Gilmore Girls was returning in a Netflix revival, fans knew one important character would be missing from the special: Richard Gilmore. Played by Edward Hermann, Richard is a fan-favorite character from the original show. He’s strong, funny, and he supports his family. He also has some of the best lines from the show.

Unfortunately, Hermann passed away in 2015. The revival added Richard’s death, and it was heartbreaking to watch his wife, Emily (Kelly Bishop), try to pick up the pieces. At one point, she says, “I don’t know how to do it. Live my life.” Anyone who has experienced loss, especially a spouse, can relate to Emily’s confusion on how to move forward with her life as a widow.

9 “I’m Blowing Everything. My Life, My Career…”

One of the main storylines of Gilmore Girls: A Year in the Life is about Rory Gilmore’s (Alexis Bledel) adjustment in her career. She’s not exactly living up to fan's expectations, not to mention her own. She’s supposed to be like her role model Christiane Amanpour and travel the world while reporting fascinating news.

Rory’s understandably disappointed with herself. She says, “I’m blowing everything. My life, my career… I’m flailing, and I don’t have a plan or a list or a clue.” In Gilmore Girls, Rory is known for being organized and her good work ethic. She’s not like that in the revival, and anyone who has also felt lost in their career can relate to Rory’s dilemma.

8 “This Whole Year, It’s Like The Ground’s Made Of Straw…”

Rory’s year isn’t easy. Her love life is a mess. She’s struggling to find work as a journalist. She feels like a disaster. She says, “I’m feeling very lost these days. This whole year, it’s like the ground’s made of straw and I’m just going to fall through.”

Poor Rory. Sure, she has made some bad decisions that led her to this mess, but she’s confused. Her life is very dramatic, and she doesn’t know what to do. Who hasn’t been in her shoes?

7 “This Adult Stuff Is Hard, Isn’t It?”

In the revival, Rory visits her longtime best friend, Lane Kim (Keiko Agena). Rory and Lane have always been close friends, and nothing has changed over the years. They can still talk to each other about anything.

Lane understands how Rory feels about adulthood. She’s married and a mother, and she still doesn’t know how to function as an adult. She says, “this adult stuff is hard, isn’t it?” She spoke the truth. When Rory confesses how lost she feels, Lane says, “I am protecting you for some reason.” Everyone needs a friend like Lane Kim.

6 “Suddenly, I Feel Like I Am Standing Still…”

In the revival, Rory isn’t the only character struggling with her emotions. Her mother, Lorelai (Lauren Graham), is also feeling lost. She’s at a standstill in her relationship with Luke Danes (Scott Patterson), and she contemplates having another child. She’s going through a midlife crisis, and fans missed the perky, quirky Lorelai Gilmore they always loved.

Lorelai admitted, “I always thought I had insight. I thought I knew exactly what I wanted, where I was going, what I was doing, and why I was doing it. I was so sure. But, lately, I don’t know… things seem hazier. Suddenly, I feel like I am standing still… like the whole world is moving and I am standing completely still.” When life throws a curveball, it’s hard to adjust. Lorelai isn’t the only person who has ever felt this way.

5 “But There Is No One Who Will Be More Here For You Than Me.”

When Lorelai feels lost and confused, Luke tries his best to comfort her. He reassures her that he will always be by her side, no matter what. They are going to eventually get married (which, they do), and he will support her.

He tells her that “there is no one who will be more here for you than me. I will never leave. I will never think about leaving.” Luke confesses his feelings in a heartwarming speech that fans needed. Lorelai’s relationship with Luke will always be one of the best parts of Gilmore Girls.

4 “You’re Still A Contender.”

In the revival, Rory gets a job working as the editor of the small Stars Hollow Gazette. It’s completely different than her experience as the editor of the Yale Daily News, and it’s nothing like the New York Times. However, it’s a job.

When Rory reunites with her ex-boyfriend, Jess Mariano (Milo Ventimiglia), at the newspaper office, she talks about her frustrations with her life and career. She’s in a rut. She says, “I coulda been a contender,” quoting Marlon Brando’s character Terry Malloy in the 1954 film On the Waterfront. She could have achieved so much more. Jess, being the supportive man he always was for Rory, says, “you’re still a contender.” In Jess’s eyes, she’s still going places.

3 “Drop The ‘The.’ Just ‘Gilmore Girls.’ It’s Cleaner.”

During Jess’s pep talk with Rory, he suggests that she writes a book about her relationship with Lorelai. It’s a unique story about Lorelai getting pregnant when she was 16 years old and how Lorelai and Rory have always been best friends.

Rory decides to proceed with the idea and she writes a book that is essentially a retelling of the original television series. When she shows the book to Lorelai, she originally titled it “The Gilmore Girls.” Lorelai says, “Drop the ‘The.’ Just ‘Gilmore Girls.’ It’s cleaner.” This is name dropping the show’s title, and it’s a sweet moment.

2 “Oh, You Never Really Needed Rescuing, Ace. You Know That.”

During the revival, Rory meets up with her ex-boyfriend, Logan Huntzberger (Matt Czuchry), in London. They engage in romantic affairs, even though Logan is engaged, and Rory has a boyfriend, even though she’s always forgetting about Paul. It seems that, no matter how much time has passed, Rory hasn’t let go of her feelings for Logan.

Logan knows how confused Rory feels. When she mentions that he helped her, he rejects the idea. He says, “oh, you never really needed rescuing, Ace. You know that.” Just like Jess, Logan has believed in Rory. She needs to believe in herself.

1 “Mom?” “Yeah?” “I’m Pregnant?”

Fans knew that Gilmore Girls creator Amy Sherman-Palladino had an idea of what the final four words would be of Gilmore Girls. She left the original series before the seventh season, so she couldn’t end the show the way she had planned. With the revival, she could finally have the conclusion she wanted.

Rory shocked Lorelai and fans alike with a big announcement. She said, “Mom?” Lorelai responded, “Yeah?” To which Rory revealed, “I’m pregnant.” That’s it. Rory’s pregnant, most likely with Logan as the father, and the circle of life continues for the Gilmore girls.
