Zelda BOTW's Pre-Calamity Map & Locations Revealed In Age Of Calamity

Nintendo has revealed the map for Hyrule Warriors: Age of Calamity, also showing what The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild's map looks like pre-Calamity. Hyrule Warriors: Age of Calamity tells the tale of how the kingdom of Hyrule succumbed to the dark forces of Calamity Ganon, and players will be able to explore BOTW's map before the 100 years of destruction and ruin began.

The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild introduced the massive open-world version of Hyrule in which Link could freely explore with minimal limitations. However, the Hyrule in BOTW was different from previous Legend of Zelda titles not only in scale but also in its condition. Breath of the Wild takes place 100 years after Calamity Ganon has taken over Hyrule, and various portions of the map have been left in ruin. While few villages and cities remain intact, Breath of the Wild allows players to walk among the rubble of and crumbling architecture of a Hyrule that once was.

Now, Hyrule Warriors: Age of Calamity is allowing players to explore the kingdom of Hyrule before and during Calamity Ganon's assault. During a Nintendo Treehouse event, players were given a first look at the map in which Hyrule Warriors takes place, revealing that it's nearly identical to the one used in Breath of the Wild. Similar to other Warriors titles, missions, chapters, and item shops are accessed through a central menu system in Hyrule Warriors: Age of Calamity. Instead of a traditional menu, Hyrule Warriors: Age of Calamity uses the map of Hyrule as its menu.

While the games may share the same map, Hyrule Warriors is far from an open-world title. Players must select a specific location on the map when starting a mission, and when inside a mission there is a set perimeter in which the player must remain. This prevents the player from freely exploring a pre-apocalyptic Hyrule. However, players can unlock new locations using items they have collected in each level. Some of these places can be visited while partaking in a mission, while other "locations" simply unlock even more menus to peruse.

Those who plan on playing Hyrule Warriors: Age of Calamity should go into the title knowing that there won't be a ton of exploration involved in the title. Age of Calamity will allow players to take control of some of their favorite characters from The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild while also learning the full story of how Calamity Ganon overtook Hyrule. It is a bummer knowing that players won't be able to crawl into every nook and cranny of a pre-Calamity Hyrule, but it will be interesting to see which bits and pieces Hyrule Warriors: Age of Calamity does allow players to see.
