Tesla Model Y With Seven Seats Arrives Early December, Says Elon Musk

Tesla CEO Elon Musk recently confirmed that a seven seat option for its Model Y crossover electric SUV will enter production next month, with deliveries expected to begin in early December. If correct, then this likely represents a ramping up of availability, considering the Tesla website still suggests the wait time on this model is longer.

The Model Y is Tesla's newest electric vehicle to leave the assembly line and join the roads. Initially unveiled in early 2019, it began actual production this past January with its first deliveries to customers beginning in March. As a crossover SUV, the Model Y offers the size and capability of Tesla's more established Model X, but at a more affordable price. This past June, Tesla announced it would lower the price of the Model Y by $3,000. It currently sits at a purchase price of $49,990 for the standard long range motor with no add-ons, like the new seven seat option.

According to Tesla's website, the seven seat option is currently visible as a $3,000 add-on option for the interior, but it is shaded and cannot be selected yet. There is also a note below the button that reads, "Seven Seat Interior Available in 2021." Perhaps Tesla's web designers haven't been able to keep up with Elon Musk's Twitter page this week, but it would appear that production on the new Model Ys is moving forward efficiently and customers might be able to reserve a seven seater sooner than anticipated. That being said, its tough to determine when anyone can expect to actually see one on their driveway.

In true Elon Musk fashion, the Tesla CEO was quick to engage with followers and offered an honest answer to the question about the seven seater Model Y. However, Musk also has a habit of responding quickly and vaguely to give the public just enough exciting information, but still leave plenty of questions unanswered. For instance, who will be receiving the first deliveries of the new Model Y in December? Since new customers visiting the website cannot select the seven seat option yet, it must be a select crowd that can expect that extra row of seating first.

Whether the seven seat interior becomes widely available as an add-on next week, next month, or indeed next year should still be exciting news for customers. Especially those with large families and extra passengers. Regardless, Tesla's Gigafactories producing the Model Y worldwide will begin adding the two additional seats on the assembly line next month. Who will receive the first versions in December is still yet to be known, but if fans of the automaker have learned anything, it's the best way to get honest information about Tesla is to follow its CEO on Twitter.
