The wait is soon to be over as Netflix's teaser for Selena: The Series reveals its release date. The teaser comes almost a full two years after the streamer announced the project, which will follow the personal life and the to0-short career of Tejano music star Selena Quintanilla-Pérez, who was killed at the age of 23.
Christian Serratos will star as the Latina pop singer; she most recently starred in AMC's The Walking Dead. She is the second actor to portray the star, after Jennifer Lopez's star-turning role in Gregory Nava's biopic, which is celebrated by fans and viewers alike as one of greatest music biopics of all time. The film catapulted Lopez into stardom, even if her casting as a Mexican-American singer received some backlash (Lopez is Puerto Rican-American). Netflix's announcement of the series was well-received, as Serratos already had a fan base due to her work.
Now, Netflix has shared the teaser for Selena: The Series, which reveals a December 4 premiere date. The voice of Ricardo Chavira, who plays patriarch Abraham Quintanilla, explains Selena's quick rise to fame, and that despite her soon-to-be international stardom, she's still that six-year-old girl singing in her backyard. The black-and-white teaser also showcases Serratos's Selena performing on stage, accompanied by her band, which featured her brother, A.B., songwriter and bassist; sister Suzie, percussionist; and husband Chris, the heavy metal guitarist who gave the band the edge they needed to successfully crossover.
The series will reportedly be a two-part series; the first part that will be premiering in December, will be comprised of six hour-long episodes. Per TVLine, in addition to Chavira, Gabriel Chavarria will star as A.B., Noemi Gonzalez as Suzie, and Seidy Lopez as matriarch Marcella, with newcomer Madison Taylor Baez as Young Selena.
It's not clear yet what narrative arcs either parts will cover, but judging from the teaser, part one could revolve entirely around Selena's childhood, when started as the frontwoman for Selena y los Dinos, a family band managed by her father. The group soon turned into a backing band for the young starlet who, while recording a significant Spanish-English crossover album, was shot to death by Yolanda Saldívar, the president of Selena's fan club who had been embezzling money. Saldívar is currently serving a life sentence for the murder.
Although fans and Selena-novices alike are well-versed in the singer's life like it's a Greek fable, Netflix's upcoming series is still very much anticipated. Despite her short-lived career, Selena's ability to reach beyond her base and still acquire fans today is due to her wonderful personality. In an interview Nava gave with Screen Rant, the director stated, "She was such a special young women. She was super talented...and above her incredible musical talent, she had this ability to touch people's hearts in a way that was very special."
Selena: The Series premieres on December 4, 2020 on Netflix.
