Nest Audio Vs. Nest Mini: Google's $49 & $99 Smart Speakers Compared

Nest Mini is a great smart home speaker and a good way to extend Google Assistant throughout the home. However, with the company now offering Nest Audio, consumers have a choice of Google-branded smart speakers to choose from. Here's a quick explainer on the differences between the $49 Nest Mini and the $99 Nest Audio.

The list of things that smart speakers can do is growing and this is particularly true of Google's products, with the company routinely adding new features and support. Whether checking the weather before an outdoor adventure, listening to the latest Stephen King audiobook, or wondering who played that one character on Seinfeld, a smart speaker can do it all and more.

Smart speakers have become very popular as they are so versatile, accessible, affordable, and easy to use. It is not necessary to be tech-savvy to take full advantage of their features, and in addition to playing your favorite music, both the Nest Mini and the Nest Audio support Google’s Assistant and can connect and communicate with other devices that link up with the home’s Wi-Fi connection. However, there are differences as well, with the audio quality being the most obvious.

The Nest Audio, like all other Google Assistant devices, is capable of announcing weather conditions on command, playing music, and controlling the house thermometer. It is also capable of pairing with multiple units throughout the house. However, besides a new look, the only real difference between the Nest Mini and Nest Audio is the sound quality. Basically, the Nest Audio is far more suited to those looking at a smart speaker as an actual music playback device. The Nest Mini was a real step up in sound compared to its predecessor, the Google Home Mini. It offers clearer tones, lower bass, and a decent midrange, however, some music can sound washed out. Google states that the Nest Audio’s sound is clear, full, and natural. As good as the sound is on the Nest Mini, it just won’t compare to the Nest Audio.

Google launched the Nest Mini with a dedicated learning chip that allows Google Assistant to learn the user's favorite tastes in music faster than on previous devices. The same learning chip is used in the Nest Audio, ensuring a fast response from Google Assistant. The Nest Audio protects privacy better than the Nest Mini as well as it will delete the history on command and the microphone can be physically turned off by sliding the mic switch on the back of the device. For the money, the Nest Mini is still a great product, but for music enthusiasts, and those who are concerned about privacy, the Nest Audio is the clear choice. For those looking for a device to extend their smart home to new rooms, either will do, but music lovers will definitely want to go with Google’s Nest Audio.
