Marvel's Ghost Rider/Sorcerer Supreme Kushala To Get Her Own Series

Marvel Comics has quietly confirmed that Demon Rider Kushala - a character who is both Ghost Rider and Sorcerer Supreme - will star in her own ongoing series beginning next year. The demon Zarathos has been at large since the dawn of time, possessing one host after another, transforming every one of them into the latest Ghost Rider. The first Ghost Rider rode a woolly mammoth 1,000,000 years ago, and ever since then, Ghost Riders have hunted those who would prey on the innocent.

One of the most intriguing Ghost Riders is a woman called Kushala, who was introduced in Robbie Thompson's tremendous Doctor Strange & the Sorcerers Supreme. She was an Apache warrior who was possessed by the Spirit of Vengeance after her tribe were slaughtered by US soldiers. But she was an unwilling host, and sought mystical means to free herself of Zarathos' influence. Kushala became one of the most powerful sorcerers of all time, even attaining the rank of Sorcerer Supreme in the mid-1800s. Sadly, she was never able to find a way to free herself from Zarathos' curse, even with the help of Merlin himself.

Marvel Comics has confirmed that Kushala is soon to return as the star of her own line of books. The publisher is currently promoting its upcoming Marvel's Voices: Indigenous Voices #1 one-shot, featuring stories centering on many of its Native American characters and coming from indigenous creators. They commissioned a stunning variant cover from Jeffrey Veregge featuring Kushala, and declared, "fans will get to learn even more about Kushala in an exhilarating new solo comic series coming in 2021!"

Marvel editor-in-chief C.B. Cebulski has promised Marvel's Voices: Indigenous Voices #1 is the beginning of a committed effort to improve diversity in Marvel - both on and off the page. It looks as though that includes a new series for the most unexpected Sorcerer Supreme, although details at the moment are basically scant as to what that series might entail. It's interesting to speculate whether or not Jeffrey Veregge will himself be involved with additional art for the book.

Marvel has been expanding its magical line of late, with Earth's various mystics founding Strange Academy, essentially Marvel's version of Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry. It will be interesting to see if the upcoming Demon Rider series dovetails with Strange Academy, continuing to expand the mystical corner of the Marvel Universe. Hopefully it won't be long before Marvel actually gives an official announcement, revealing the actual creative team, story details and a planned release date for this unexpected and welcomed new series.
