Jamie Foxx’s Spider-Man Return Is Bad News For One MCU Villain

Jamie Foxx is returning to the role of Electro for the MCU's Spider-Man 3, and that should mean viewers have seen the last of one of the villains left over from Spider-Man: Homecoming - Shocker. Having played the villain for the first and only time in the much-maligned The Amazing Spider-Man 2, it had long seemed as though Foxx's tenure as Electro was well and truly over. But with the MCU opening up the multiverse and the lines between Sony and Marvel's franchises increasingly blurring, Foxx has been given a second chance.

It remains to be seen exactly how Electro's return works or what plans Sony and Marvel have for him, though the most likely outcome is that this fits with a revival of the former's plans for the Sinister Six to team-up, something the MCU Spider-Man movies have already started loosely setting up. Several potential members already exist from both Spider-Man: Homecoming and Spider-Man: Far From Home, including the likes of Vulture (Michael Keaton), Scorpion (Michael Mando), and Mysterio (Jake Gyllenhaal), but the inclusion of Electro in Spider-Man: Homecoming 3 is bad news for one MCU villain.

Among the array of villains in Spider-Man: Homecoming was Shocker, who serves as part of Adrian Toomes' crew. The original Shocker, Jackson Brice (Logan Marshall-Green) was killed off by Vulture, with his gauntlet then passed on to Herman Schultz (Bokeem Woodbine), who assumed the mantle of Shocker. Last seen being defeated by Spider-Man and subsequently arrested, the fact the character was left alive certainly meant the door was open for a return. With Vulture himself set to come back in the future (at least in Morbius, but presumably future Spider-Man installments as well), and the Sinister Six on the table, then Shocker, a frequent Spider-Man villain in the comics, might've been well-placed to appear again. But with Electro, that now feels far less likely.

Although the two villains aren't exactly the same, having Electro in Spider-Man 3 does rather render Shocker as moot. After all, while Shocker has to rely on his gauntlet to provide him with the ability to use electric shock charges, that isn't the case of Electro, who is a superpowered being and possesses a much greater array of abilities. Although Spider-Man 3 could perhaps make a joke of it, there's little need to have to electricity-centric villains in the same movie, not least when one is so much stronger - and thus a far greater threat - than the other.

This especially makes sense if, as suspected, the MCU and Sony's Marvel movies are laying the groundwork for the Sinister Six to appear. While Shocker has been involved with the team in various Marvel Comics storylines, Electro is far more synonymous with them and is among their founding members, and so is a much better option to include in a big screen version. It also builds more hype for Spider-Man 3's release too, with the return of Electro a bigger sell than the return of Shocker. While the villain served a purpose in Spider-Man: Homecoming and Woodbine did a good job in the role, it would seem as though the plug has been pulled on any chances of him returning.
