The first issue of Inkblot revealed that the mysterious black cat accidentally created by the princess of the Living Castle can summon an immense amount of magic to open not just one portal (which in and of itself is impressive), but numerous portals to other realms. This magical feline can also apparently defeat massive dragons just by partaking in a seemingly innocuous pastime: chasing mice. Either the dragon this kitty defeated is superstitious (the cat is black after all and crosses the dragon's path) or the claim by creators Emma Kubert and Rusty Gladd that the adorable ball of fur possesses a power that "threatens to unravel the fabric of the universe" has merit. For the moment, the dragon lays eyes on the kitty in issue #2, it flies off. It's for that reason that some consider this cat to be the most powerful feline in comics.
The second issue of Inkblot takes place much deeper in the Forestlands, away from the Living Castle in the Elven village of Cobblewood. Here, the magical cat has purred its way into the affectionate arms of an elf named Arabella. Unlike the princess of the Living Castle, Arabella has yet to witness her pet’s incredible powers and therefore has no reason to assume that it’s anything but a normal feline. So when a dragon emerges from the Haunted Cave, Arabella pleads the kitty to stay at home, to which the feline obliges with no objection and watches innocently from a window as Arabella, her mother and elven comrades rush deep into the forest to stave off the dragon’s assault.
However, the ball of fur later does appear amidst the burning battlefield as the dragon lays waste to most of the elven army, but not to help. It only comes for some well-deserved lovin’ from its owner by climbing on top of Arabella, who had just earlier been knocked over by a violent blast of fire from the dragon. Whether the cat is aware of its innate abilities or is just utterly clueless and laser-focused on receiving attention, the kitty doesn’t seem to notice that the dragon is about to engulf it - and Arabella - in a ball of flames. (This requires Arabella to “rescue” the feline before rushing back into battle.)
In what now seems to be typical behavior, the kitty refuses to enter the fray and seems to be utterly content to just watch innocently from the sidelines. That is, until it notices a mouse residing in one of the dragon’s nostrils. Now, the kitten is interested and treats the dragon as if it were a giant, lazy dog by proceeding to trot up the winged beast’s tail. The feline meanders along the appendage that supports the wing’s membrane and up the dragon’s arm to later leap from one of its fingers onto one of its horns. The cat soon steps over one of the dragon’s numerous eyes and then finally peers over the edge of the nostril where the mouse resides. It is when the inevitable ensuing chase requires the cat to leap in front of the dragon that the winged beast recoils and flies away. It sure looks as though the cat did something. But what?
Regardless of whether readers believe that the cat couldn't achieve the same end result with other dragons again, the elves who witnessed this incredible occurrence think this was not coincidental and proceed to praise the kitty in a manner that suggests they may soon regard the feline as a god. Only time - and more issues of Inkblot - will tell.
