Avatar: The Last Airbender: 5 Quotes That Prove Zuko Is A Gryffindor (& 5 That Disprove This)

When it comes to high-quality animated shows, there are few better examples than the legendary Avatar: The Last Airbender. Not only is it popular with kids, but it also attracts teenagers and probably appeals to adults too considering its detailed storytelling and engaging characters.

One such relatable character is Zuko whose character development arc has been the topic of discussion for many years. His personality is quite complex which is why it's so hard to place him in a single Hogwarts house. He might be a Gryffindor... or not.

10 Not Gryffindor: "Why Am I So Bad At Being Good?"

Though Zuko starts out as a villain, he gradually develops and grows as a person becoming a much better individual. However, even as he sets out on this journey, he realizes just how much his past bad habits are showing up and preventing him from doing good things.

This realization from Zuko's side could show that he is becoming a good Slytherin.

9 Gryffindor: "Zuko: I've Spent Years Preparing For This Encounter, Training, Meditating. You're Just A Child. / Aang: Well, You're Just A Teenager."

Gryffindors can often be hot-headed individuals who sometimes act before thinking their actions through. But one of their worst traits is their pride and the way they can be extremely confident while disregarding others.

And this might just be the reason why Zuko could belong to this house. When he first meets Aang, he is surprised to find out that he isn't a hundred-year-old man but just a twelve-year-old child. He underestimates Aang, though, and ends up chasing him for half of the show.

8 Not Gryffindor: "In The Darkness, Hope Is Something You Give Yourself."

Zuko is surprisingly optimistic for someone who has been abused so much and seems to be in a constant state of anger. Perhaps his optimism is what helped him keep overcoming challenges even when everything seemed awful.

This ability to find hope even on the darkest days might signal that Zuko is a Hufflepuff as they are known to be quite optimistic and cheerful.

7 Gryffindor: "My Honor, My Throne, My Country. I'm About To Lose Them All."

Reputation seems to be important to Gryffindors, especially when the matter concerns their ability to prove themselves. If their fearlessness is being challenged, they will probably go out of their way to prove they are brave.

Likewise, Zuko cares about his honor a lot, not just because he wants to get his father's favor back. He cares about his country and his throne hoping that he can lead his people one day.

6 Not Gryffindor: "Never Forget Who You Are, For Surely The World Won't."

Zuko and Draco are somewhat similar when you think about it. They are both angsty teenagers who are forced to do questionable things because of the pressure from those around them.

In fact, Zuko goes out of his way to remind himself about this. Perhaps he is a Slytherin just like Draco.

5 Gryffindor: "Zuko: [While Panhandling] This Is Humiliating! We're Royalty. These People Should Be Giving Us Whatever We Want. / Iroh: They Will - If You Ask Nicely."

When Zuko and Iroh become enemies of the Fire Nation, Zuko is still set on pursuing the Avatar. The only problem is that they don't have anything anymore and are forced to beg on the streets.

Obviously, unused to such treatment, Zuko bursts out with frustration, but his uncle is more patient. This attitude from Zuko could show that he is somewhat self-centered which is a characteristic associated with Gryffindors.

4 Not Gryffindor: "Iroh: I'm Sorry. I Just Nag You Because, Well, Since I Lost My Son... / Zuko: Uncle, You Don't Have To Say It. / Iroh: I Think Of You As My Own. / Zuko: I Know, Uncle."

Uncle Iroh has been like a father to Zuko for a long time. Luckily, Zuko grows to appreciate his care and love even though he often ignores his uncle's words initially.

Iroh views Zuko as his deceased son and Zuko knows this - but he doesn't want to bring it up because he knows it will pain his uncle. This caring side of Zuko could actually show that he is a Hufflepuff.

3 Gryffindor: "Zuko: Let The Kid Go. / Gow: [Laughs] Who Do You Think You Are, Telling Us What To Do? / Zuko: It Doesn't Matter Who I Am. But I Know Who You Are. You're Not Soldiers, You're Bullies; Freeloaders, Abusing Your Power, Mostly Over Women And Kids. You Don't Want Lee In Your Army. You're Sick Cowards Messing With A Family Who's Already Lost One Son To The War."

While being considered enemies of the nation, Zuko and Iroh find refuge in an Earth Kingdom family. Earth Kingdom soldiers arrive to attempt to take Lee from the family, but Zuko intervenes and stands his ground.

This brave act on his side could have easily blown their cover, but Zuko still decides to stand up to the bullies. That's a truly Gryffindor act from his side.

2 Not Gryffindor: "Zuko: If My Father Thinks The Rest Of The World Will Follow Him Willingly, Then He Is A Fool! / Zhao: Two Years At Sea Have Done Little To Temper Your Tongue."

When Admiral Zhao meets with Zuko in the early season one, he tells Zuko about his father's plans. But Zuko is quick to point out just how stupid the Firelord's plans are.

He sees the issues clearly even though he is just a teenager. This intelligence and an analytical mind could prove that Zuko is a Ravenclaw.

1 Gryffindor: "I Want The Avatar. I Want My Honor, My Throne. I Want My Father Not To Think I'm Worthless."

Aang and Zuko's relationship is central to the show. The way they go from enemies to allies and friends shows just how much both of them grow throughout their respective journeys.

But the reason why this relationship even began is that Zuko was obsessed with honor - or, more importantly, with regaining his father's favor. He realizes just how much he needs it and acknowledges this flaw which could show that he is a very self-aware Gryffindor.
