As the regional manager of the Scranton branch, Michael Scott (Steve Carell) plays a very important role in The Office – a mockumentary-style series about a fictional paper company called Dunder Mifflin. Many of the things he does throughout the series are quite questionable. Most of his actions create the impression that he is not a typical boss and this makes him funny and also occasionally annoying to work with.
From the little information that he reveals about his childhood, one can easily come to the conclusion that it has an impact on what he does and it also helps viewers understand him better.
10 His Relationship With Toby
From calling Toby (Paul Lieberstein) boring to even sending Toby out of meetings, Michael made his dislike for Toby very clear. Michael explains that his job is to make the office a fun place to work at and Toby's is to stop him.
However, many fans believe that Michael's detestation for Toby stems from the fact that Toby is divorced, thus reminding Michael of his childhood. Besides, the fact that Michael connected well with Holly Flax, who is also in HR, shows that Toby's job is not the only reason Michael is hostile to him.
9 He's Distracting At Work
There are a lot of times in the show when it is unbelievable that Michael is actually the manager of Dunder Mifflin's Scranton branch. Be it his unnecessary conference room meetings or just hanging around the office in an attempt to entertain everyone, which usually comes off as mere disturbance, Michael can be easily described as a distraction at work.
With Michael telling the story of how he used to distract his classmates by making farting noises, it can be assumed that he probably liked the attention he got back then, thus he continues to do the same.
8 Hanging Out With Todd Packer
Todd Packer (David Koechner) is one of the worst characters in the series. He constantly makes rude comments and his behavior is nowhere near appropriate. Although everyone at the office hates him, Michael likes hanging out with him and cherishes his old days as a salesman.
When Michael recalls the way the two used to fool around – like the time they spent a whole afternoon without pants – he thinks it is hilarious, but actually, it is not. Michael's friendship with Packer can easily be connected to his wish to hangout with the cool kids of the school.
7 He Wants To Be A Part Of Office Gossip
Entering the break room, Michael overhears everyone discussing the possibility of two of the interns – Eric and Megan - getting married after they went on a date. When Michael realizes that he is the only one who didn't know about this, he is devasted.
Then recalling from his childhood, he explains that he hates to be left out, even remembering incidents of not being picked for a team or chosen to be a part of a team or a game that doesn't exist. Later, in the episode, he gets excited to know that Stanley Hudson (Leslie David Baker) is having an affair, a bit of office gossip that he gets to share with everyone.
6 He Moves Fast In A Relationship
The way Michael fell in love with Holly Flax (Amy Ryan) on the very first day he met her. or the way he asked Carole Stills (Nancy Carell) to marry him when they have only been on a few dates – shows that Michael tends to move fast in a relationship.
One of the main reasons for this could definitely be his desire to be happily married, unlike his parents, who are divorced. With Michael showing photographs of his children – even having a second phone because of it – shows that he did get the marriage that he always hoped for.
5 He Wants To Have Children
Michael has expressed his interest in having children in various instances throughout the series – he wanted to see his future children play in his condo, and his username on a dating site was Little Kid Lover.
His desire to have children surely stems from the lack of friends he had in his childhood. When showing a tape of the time he was on TV, he is seen saying, "I want to be married and have 100 kids so I can have 100 friends and no one can say no to being my friend."
4 He Plays By Himself
When there is a fire in the office, everyone comes down to the car park and they start playing games, including Deserted Island and Who Would You Do? Michael, who is initially talking to Dwight Schrute (Rainn Wilson) and Ryan Howard (B.J Novak) about Ryan attending business school, joins the fun and says that he always plays the second game by himself before going to sleep.
While everyone around him finds this weird, Michael's obliviousness to the situation shows that he thinks this is normal. Although never mentioned, growing up, Michael probably played alone to entertain himself and has become accustomed to it.
3 He Plays Board Games As A Coping Mechanism
Following rumors that Dunder Mifflin is going to be shut down, most of the people in the office are worried about losing their jobs. As co-manager, Jim Halpert (John Krasinski) thinks everyone should continue working as usual because nothing has been confirmed yet.
On the other hand, Michael decides to divert everyone's attention from the situation by playing a murder mystery board game. He justifies his decision to do so by recollecting all the times he used board games as his coping mechanism. The first time probably being the time his parents got divorced.
2 His Plan To Get Everyone Friendlier With Each Other
After the employees from Dunder Mifflin's Stamford branch move to the Scranton branch due to the merger, the two groups don't seem to get along at first. Michael takes the situation into his own hands and tries different tricks to get everyone talking. Although all his ideas come off as ridiculous, the people from the two branches do start talking to each other - about him.
He explains that talking about the lunch lady is what gets everyone closer until they realize that a lunch lady is a nice person. Then, he remembers how he spent most of his time talking to the lunch lady in his school.
1 He Crashes Jim's Party
When Michael discovers an e-vite from Jim inviting everyone in the office, except him, to a barbecue party, he is not happy about it. He initially thinks that his invitation got lost and tries to get himself invited. When he fails, he ends up crashing the party.
His wish not to be like his old boss, who was strict, is one reason that he wants to be part of the office fun. The other is his desire to party with friends and be accepted, which might not have happened in school.
