The Batman: Why The Riddler's Plan May Involve Bruce Wayne

Riddler's plan in The Batman purposefully includes getting Bruce Wayne's attention, and the Wayne family legacy could be why. The Dark Knight is being rebooted once again for the big screen, this time with Robert Pattinson starring and Matt Reeves directing, and this will include a new take on Riddler. Paul Dano is playing Edward Nashton in The Batman and will serve as the main villain of the film, as evident by the movie's first trailer.

Even though the footage from The Batman comes with only 25% of filming completed, it still provided the first bit of insight into what Riddler has planned. He kills Gotham's mayor at the beginning of the trailer and writes "No more lies" on his concealed face. But, he also leaves his first riddle for Batman (one we've already solved). This card ropes Bruce into Riddler's plan to shine a light on the corruption of Gotham, and the trailer ends with Riddler's ominous tease that Bruce is "part of this too."

There's still a lot fans don't know about The Batman or Riddler's motivations in the movie, but his decision to repeatedly draw the attention of Batman/Bruce clearly isn't a mistake. Since Batman is only in his second year as a crime fighter, it is somewhat less likely that the reason Riddler wants his attention is because of something Bruce has done. Furthermore, the dialogue in the trailer indicates that Riddler knows Bruce is Batman. If this is the case, then his family's history with Gotham could be how Bruce factors into Riddler's plan.

It's possible the reason Riddler is keen on involving Bruce is because of his parents. Riddler is trying to end the years of lies and reveal the truth about the city, and people as powerful and wealthy as the Waynes might have played a part, even if Bruce is totally unaware of how that could be. While Thomas and Martha Wayne are viewed as upstanding members of Gotham's elite, they could have ties to how corrupt it has become in a variety of ways. Maybe they helped cover up certain facts or protect (or even put) dangerous people in power. Or, could the Wayne family tree be tied to an even bigger threat that Riddler is trying to reveal?

Fans have already begun to wonder if Reeves has plans to use the Court of Owls. The secret group has been around for almost as long as Gotham itself and they've worked in the shadows to make the city become what they want it to be. A possible Court of Owls tease in The Batman trailer has been spotted, leading to speculation that they could be the main villains of the film - or even the trilogy. The comics have shown Bruce wonder if the Court of Owls were responsible for the deaths of his parents. This could be something Reeves implements in The Batman, with Riddler potentially revealing this to Bruce. Perhaps Riddler's ultimate hope is to get Batman to take out the Court of Owls and eliminate their control over Gotham, giving him and other villains a better chance to take power.
