Angels were first introduced in Supernatural during the fourth season and since then, there have been a number of them. Initially, series creator Eric Kripke initially didn't want angels to appear at all. It has been reported that he had a "No angels" policy during the first two seasons. However, the writers convinced him to change his mind.
The angels are numerous but only seven have been lucky enough to meet God so far. Despite being tasked with guarding heaven and protecting righteous humans, not all angels have turned out to be good. But even some of the bad ones have proven to be fan-favorites. Here are the ones fans adore, and those they hate.
10 Likable: Jack
Jack's case is that of an apple falling very far from the tree. Even though he is Lucifer's son, he is nothing like his father. Jack is kind at heart and has even gone on to look up to Castiel than with his real villainous father.
Having been trained by the Winchesters, Jack is a very skilled fighter. and leader. He was able to lead a human resistance against Archangel Michael, in which he scored many victories. Jack has a conscience too. When he accidentally kills someone, he shows great remorse. As shown through his relationship with Mia Vallens, he is also sympathetic to people who are misjudged because of their background.
9 Can't Stand: Naomi
As the secondary antagonist of Season 8. Naomi does plenty of damage. She saves Castiel from Purgatory and brainwashes him into working as her agent. Castiel goes on to spy on the Winchesters since they trust him.
Her unforgivable deed comes when she compels Castiel to torture Dean so that he can give up the Angel Tablet. She then orders Castiel to kill him. Luckily, that doesn't happen. Naomi is also less empathic towards humans. She is willing to murder as many as she can in order to make sure her goals are achieved.
8 Likable: Balthazar
Balthazar isn't exactly good but he is very entertaining. He is the only angel who has demonstrated free will. He does whatever he wants, even when he knows the consequences won't be pleasant. Among all the angels, he is the one that behaves like a human the most.
During his time on the show, he has stolen heavens weapons, faked his own death, and indulged in a hedonistic lifestyle. He often sides with whoever has goals that align with his. He has worked with the Winchesters as well as Castiel, Sadly, he ends up dying after trying to stop Castiel from opening the gates of Purgatory.
7 Can't Stand: Zachariah
Zachariah's intentions are good at first. He rallies for the release of Lucifer to allow for Michael to kill him, This way, Earth can become a paradise. But his lack of charm makes him unable to relate well with angels or humans.
During the apocalypse, Zachariah tries to convince Dean and Sam to be vessels for Michael and Lucifer. When they don't comply, he tortures their half-brother Adam until he says yes. And when his siblings ridicule him for failing to convince Sam and Dean, he turns into a total monster. It's a huge relief when he is finally killed by Dean.
6 Likable: Gabriel
Gabriel is the first-ever angel to appear on the show. He made his debut in Season 2 when he took on the guise of The Trickster. Despite being the youngest of the first four archangels created by God, he is equally as powerful.
And while most angels are emotionless and tend to not show feelings of sadness or happiness, Gabriel is as humorous as a standup comedian and as mischievous as a class clown. Because he never takes things seriously, he has found himself in trouble many times. Gabriel loves peace too and was shown to be totally irked by the civil war in heaven.
5 Can't Stand: Anna
Anna is a sweetheart when she first appears in Season 4. She is being hunted for defying Heaven so the Wicnesters protect her. But she is eventually captured and taken back to heaven. When she comes back, she is a different person.
She is so obsessed with stopping the Apocalypse that she travels back in time to try and kill Dean and Sam's parents so that the two can't be born. This way, they can't be used as vessels for Lucifer and Michael. But any character trying to prevent the existence of the show's two favorite characters is basically asking for hate.
4 Likable: Lucifer
Lucifer and 'likable' shouldn't be on the same sentence but this is a fictional version of the devil and he has always been written in an excellent manner. He is like a villain that's too evil and intelligent, you can't help but look forward to seeing him.
Lucifer has a greater screen presence than any other character. As the second of the four Archangels created by God, Lucifer has been the antagonist in five out of the 15 seasons. He kills without remorse and cracks sadistic jokes. He also isn't a rigid villain who totally hates the protagonists. He has worked with God and the Winchesters on a few occasions.
3 Can't Stand: Uriel
Uriel first presents himself as Castiel's ally but it's later revealed that he is a double agent working for Lucifer. When Lucifer rebelled against God, Uriel was on the creator's side but he also admired Lucifer's powers and bravado so he went on to work for him too.
Uriel comes off as ruthless and impatient. He has no qualms about killing members of his own garrison. His ruthlessness is rarely justified. He shows a desire to kill Dean and Sam doesn't make sense because the two are true vessels of Michael and Lucifer.
2 Likable: Castiel
Cass has been a reliable ally to the Winchesters ever since he first appeared in Season 4. He has been much closer to Dean, with the show hinting at a more-than-platonic relationship between them at times. There have been plenty of fan theories about the two too.
Cass is one of the most powerful supernatural beings in the entire series. He has proven to have an extra set of powers that other angels don't have. The fact that he saved Dean from hell will forever put him in the good books of fans. Not to forget that Cass dresses like a detective about to crack a major case. His trench coat has become a major item of discussion in forums.
1 Can't Stand: Metatron
At first, Matetatron gives the impression of a good angel. He assists Sam and Dean to translate the Angel Tablet. It turns out he transcribed the Angel Tablet himself, so he uses it to get all angels out of Heaven. His actions end up causing many angelic rebellions on Earth in Season 9.
He also attempts to take over God's duties and rule over mankind. And no fan can forgive him for causing Dean's death. Even though Metatron is later shown to be in good terms with God, it's hard for viewers to forget his past sins.
