Spider-Man: Far From Home Set Up Nick Fury's Show | Screen Rant

Spider-Man: Far From Home set up the upcoming Nick Fury Disney+ series. The architect of the Avengers Initiative, Samuel L. Jackson's Nick Fury is Marvel's premiere super-spy. And he's good at his job, always working from the shadows, keeping his counsel. "Even his secrets have secrets," Tony Stark quipped, and he wasn't understating the case. For years, Fury protected the world as the director of SHIELD, and he continued working as an independent operative after SHIELD was brought down in Captain America: The Winter Soldier.

Now it looks as though Nick Fury is stepping back into the spotlight. Samuel L. Jackson is returning as star of a Disney+ series, the latest fan-favorite to get his own show. There have been rumors of a Nick Fury series for years, often tied to projects such as Secret Warriors or SWORD, and it will be fascinating to see how things play out. One thing can be said for certain, though; the groundwork for this upcoming series was laid in Spider-Man: Far From Home's post-credits scene.

Spider-Man: Far From Home saw Peter Parker team up with Nick Fury, but a surprising twist in Far From Home's end-credits realized he'd actually been deceived all along. Fury had been elsewhere, and had sent the shape-shifting Skrull Talos to Earth to impersonate him. The real Nick Fury was in the depths of space, apparently in charge of some sort of vast spaceship or - more likely - space station, one staffed by Skrull soldiers.

Most viewers assumed that, in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, Nick Fury had now moved on from SHIELD to form a successor called SWORD. In the comics, the "Sentient World Observation and Response Department" are dedicated to protecting the world from extraterrestrial threats, and they pride themselves on making SHIELD look like the boy scouts. They're based on an orbital space station called the Peak, from which they intercept potential invaders. It would make sense for Earth's government to see the need for such a defense in the MCU; Earth has been ravaged by the Chitauri, devastated by Thanos' snap, and ultimately became site of the climactic final battle between the Avengers and the armies of Thanos in Avengers: Endgame. Humanity no longer believe they are alone in the universe - and they are well aware other species are malevolent in the extreme.

SWORD will actually make their MCU debut later this year, in the Disney+ TV series WandaVision. The recently-released WandaVision trailer confirmed SWORD will be called in to the town of Westview, which appears to have been consumed by a reality bubble by Scarlet Witch, whose powerset is expanding unpredictably. Both Kat Dennings' Darcy and Teyonah Parris' Monica Rambeau appear to be working for SWORD, and the latter looks set to get a power-up due to her encounter with Scarlet Witch. Assuming Fury is indeed involved in SWORD, it's possible those two will be secondary characters in the mysterious Nick Fury series.

There are a number of Disney+ TV shows in the works, but so far none of them have explored Marvel's cosmic arena. Now it looks as though that has changed, because the post-credits scene of Spider-Man: Far From Home certainly suggests Nick Fury's eye is on the sky right now. That means the scale of this particular series could be bigger than anything else Marvel has in the works for the streaming service.
