Shark Sim Maneater Gets A Free Next-Gen Upgrade & Physical Release

Surprise hit Maneater will be surfacing on next-gen consoles as a launch title. The game made waves when it arrived earlier this year, putting players in the fins and flippers of a massive shark on a revenge quest. Maneater stood out not only for its wacky, gory premise, but for its unique choice of genre as an open-world RPG, similar to games like Breath of the Wild.

Reception for the strange new "ShaRkPG" was very positive. Critics, including Screen Rant's own, were quite impressed with the brutal adventure. Sales reflected this; only months after launch, the game managed to sell over a million copies worldwide, impressive for a relatively minor studio like Tripwire Interactive. A lot of players were amused by the game's premise and its enthusiasm for living the dream as a giant, deadly monster. Maneater seems to have started a bit of a trend in that regard, as recent "reverse horror" platformer Carrion has earned acclaim for offering the same kind of power fantasy.

Developer Tripwire Interactive has decided to keep the bloody fun going by preparing a next-gen upgrade for the shark quest to be available at the launch of the PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X. As announced on the Maneater Twitter account, this upgrade will bring ray-traced graphics to the game, as well as 4K 60 FPS gameplay and immersive haptic feedback on the PS5 controller. The new version will be sold as a physical release, but current-gen Maneater owners will also be offered a free upgrade. PC shark enthusiasts can expect a next-gen upgrade of their own in early 2021, which should give them some extra time to upgrade their hardware in order to support the next-gen graphics.

Given Maneater's emphasis on evolving and upgrading the shark over time, it seems fitting that the game itself should evolve into more advanced hardware. It's far from the only game to do so; the advent of the new console generation has prompted numerous games to release for systems both old and new. A few PlayStation 5 games are even releasing for the PS4, proving that the console gap can be bridged both ways. Most of the games making the leap are major AAA titles, or annualized franchise like Call of Duty, so it's surprising to see an off-kilter game from a smaller team get the same treatment.

Maneater was a breath of fresh air and a gulp of fresh water for a lot of video game fans when it released in May. There aren't really any other video games like it to this day, even though there are plenty of open-world RPGs. It's a very special title, and it deserves the recognition it's received. It's good to know that fans will be able to tread the waters of Maneater on next-gen consoles when they come out in November.
