Nvidia Reviewing GeForce RTX 3080 Orders To Make Sure Buyers Are Real

Nvidia is now checking orders placed for its new GeForce RTX 3080 graphics card. Apparently, the company is checking to make sure the orders are from actual shoppers and not bots or those who are simply looking to buy as many as they can, so they can sell the graphics cards on at a higher price.

When Nvidia announced its new RTX 30 Series GPUs, it pronounced them as the biggest generational leap in performance it has ever achieved. That speaks volumes since Nvidia was seen by many as having the best graphics chip on the market, even before the new GPUs arrived. Reaching even higher levels of resolution and quality, the RTX 3070 beat the previous generation's best. As if that weren't enough, a new record of excellence has been set with Nvidia's top-tier RTX 3090, capable of 8K resolution at a remarkable 60 frames per second. The RTX 3080 squeezes in between the other two, priced at $699.

Nvidia sold out of its new GeForce RTX 3080 graphics card in an incredibly short period of time. The cards were expected to be popular, given the revolutionary performance, but something about the super quick sell out raised red flags. Leading Nvidia to take steps to stop potential bots and scalpers from taking advantage of the situation. Nvidia apologized for any trouble experienced with ordering before it sold out, noting that traffic surged dramatically. despite its anticipation of higher than usual traffic. That, in itself, may have been part of the alert that triggered an investigation.

The Nvidia GeForce RTX 3080 is also sold out at Best Buy, Newegg, B&H, as well as other online retailers, but there is limited stock available at some physical stores, depending on location. Nvidia noted that over 50 major global retailers had inventory at the time of launch and Nvidia and its partners are shipping more to stores every day. While checking local brick and mortar stores is an option, consumers can simply wait until the problem is resolved - in the event that many of the orders are canceled as invalid. If most of these orders are genuine, those holding out for the RTX 3080 may have to wait until supply rises enough to meet demand.

The Nvidia GeForce RTX 3080 is a fantastic graphics card and high demand is not surprising. Clearly, this went beyond what seemed reasonable to Nvidia and having access to server logs and shipping details may have further pointed to some form of abuse. If it does end up being the result of abuse, and enough Nvidia GeForce RTX 3080 orders are canceled, consumers may find stock suddenly becomes available again.
