Google is due to announce a new Chromecast device on Wednesday, although there is unlikely to be much new information actually announced at the event. Even though the device has yet to be announced by Google, major retailers like Home Depot and Walmart have already been selling the device in stores, leading to the price, specs, and what you get in the box all being confirmed, albeit unofficially.
Google’s Chromecast is a smart little device that makes it super simple to stream videos, music, and view pictures on TVs. It essentially has the power to turn a dumb TV into a smart TV by acting as a connection bridge with a smartphone. However, over the past few weeks and months, the rumors had been pointing to an even more powerful Chromecast device coming. One that no longer required a connection to a smartphone.
Over the past few days, both Walmart and Home Depot have been found to be selling Google’s new and unannounced Chromecast. In fact, some of those on Reddit have not only spotted the device in stores, but have picked it up, set it up, and confirmed many of the features and specs. Likewise, even The Verge managed to pick one up, further confirming the in store availability of the device. As a result, there is unlikely to be much left for Google to actually announce come event time tomorrow. That is, in terms of the Chromecast, as the event should still see other Nest and home-related devices, and possibly, at least one Pixel phone as well.
One of the major changes with this latest Chromecast device is the inclusion of Android TV. This has even now led to Google rebranding the device as ‘Chromecast with Google TV,’ as shown on the retail boxes. In contrast, previous Chromecast devices simply allowed the user to cast from a smartphone app to the TV’s display. However, with Android TV built directly into the device, the new Chromecast is a full streaming device all on its own. So much so that Google is bundling an actual remote control with the dongle, removing all need for the smartphone.
With much of the heavy lifting now moving to the actual Chromecast device, the unit itself is also getting a bump and boost in the spec department. Again due to the incredibly heavy nature of the leaks, those specs are all but confirmed with the Google Chromecast packing 2GB RAM and 4GB storage, while powered by an octa-core ARM Cortex-A55 processor and Android TV (based on Android 10). This is all in addition to Dolby Atmos and Dolby Vision, as well as HDR10+ and 4K support. A last, but important detail is the price. Again, Home Depot has helped out with that, considering it has been selling Google’s new Chromecast with Google TV for $49.99.
