Marvel’s Avengers Latest Patch Includes Free Rewards To Apologize For Bug

The latest patch for Marvel’s Avengers includes a free pack of in-game items to reward loyal players, along with the expected updates and bug fixes. After uneven reception to its pre-release reveals and beta tests, Marvel’s Avengers released to equally mixed reviews, garnering praise for its singleplayer campaign, but criticism for its repetitive loot grind and lackluster multiplayer experience.

Among its core problems was the rough state of Marvel’s Avengers at launch. Players immediately began encountering an overwhelming amount of bugs in the game, ranging from unsettling graphics issues to game-breaking glitches that could halt their progress or keep the game from running at all. Since launch, developer Crystal Dynamics has been working quickly to correct the most glaring errors, releasing a massive patch last week that fixed over 1,000 issues with the game, focusing on its most disruptive problems. Crystal Dynamics said that it hopes to move on to tweaking the game and adding features, but it’s also still squashing bugs in its latest patch.

According to Crystal Dynamics, one of the bugs its new version 1.3.1 patch takes care of was keeping players from accepting certain missions. Because of that, they were unable to earn the rare rewards that those missions offered. To make up for that, Crystal Dynamics is giving players a stash of 250 Polychoron and 500 Uru - two important in-game resources. Players have from now until October 1st to collect the freebies, which they can do by simply viewing a Challenge Card. Along with that bonus, the patch fixes a few more major bugs and makes a handful of changes to the game’s combat.

Of course, fixing bugs isn’t enough to keep a live game running, and Crystal Dynamics is at work adding more content, too. The developer has already promised that a number of new characters will be added to the game in time, including She-Hulk, Kate Bishop, and - at least for PlayStation 4 players - Spider-Man. Further in the future, end-game content such as raids will be coming, but Crystal Dynamics hasn’t unveiled a detailed update roadmap beyond that.

For such an enormous and highly anticipated game, Marvel’s Avengers launched in pretty rough shape. Crystal Dynamics has its work cut out for it to get it into fighting shape, but the progress it’s made so far seems to be a good sign. There may be no way to erase the poor reception for its console-exclusive character or the game’s rocky launch, but Marvel’s Avengers seems to be getting steadily better with each passing week.
