Katamari Damacy Reroll Releases On PS4 And Xbox One In November

Bandai Namco is looking to get the ball rolling on new consoles and old with a port of Katamari Damacy Reroll to Xbox One and PlayStation 4Katamari Damacy Reroll is a remaster of Keita Takahashi's odd franchise starter on the PlayStation 2 that originally came out 2004. The game already launched on both Nintendo Switch and PC in December 2018, where it received the high praise players might expect from such a classic release. While this new edition doesn't add very much in terms of new content, it translate the game beautifully to more modern hardware for all to enjoy.

For those who have somehow never had the pleasure of meeting the King of All Cosmos, Katamari Damacy is all about the King removing the stars from the sky and the Prince making up for his regal father's mistakes. He does this by rolling around a Katamari, a ball that can stick to just about anything in the world of humans. The Prince and his ball start off extremely tiny but collecting more items increases the Katamari's size up to a certain measure.  Once it's big enough, the King can fling it into the sky and send the Prince on a whole new mission.

Bandai Namco first announced that Katamari Damacy Reroll would be headed to Xbox One and PlayStation 4 in Japan, and soon followed it up with a Western release announcement for just a day after the initial date on November 20. This will be a week or so after next-gen consoles hit shelves, although those purchasing new consoles should still be able to play thanks to backwards compatibility.  The short teaser trailer doesn't suggest that there will be anything different about this version, but it is the first time this generation that a Katamari Damacy will be hitting these consoles.

When it was released back in 2004, Katamari Damacy was a huge hit, spawning many sequels over the years. A quick follow-up to the original was accompanied by Me & My Katamari, a PlayStatino Portable game that altered the gameplay a bit. Phone versions used built in motion sensors to let players mimic the Prince's rolling around stages, and the series hit HD on the 360 with Beautiful Katamari. Series creator Keita Takahashi would move on from the franchise fairly quickly, spinning out to produce equally odd titles like Noby Noby Boy and Wattam. The latter game, releasing in December 2019, features many Katamari-esque characters in a sandbox social simulation that is equal parts puzzling and heart-warming.

While it is coming out at the very last moment, it's good to see the Prince roll his way onto the current generation with Katamari Damacy Reroll. It seems clear that Namco Bandai overextended the series after the initial game's massive success, but it's been long enough since those days that a new game feels right. There are so many players who have joined the hobby since the PlayStation 2 days, and the simple arcade appeal of the best Katamari games is seemingly universal.
