Justice League Snyder Cut Shows Cyborg Is One Of DCEU’s Most Powerful Heroes

The Justice League Snyder Cut will not only redeem Cyborg (Ray Fisher) from his diminished role in the theatrical version of the movie but will also make him one of the most powerful characters in all of the DC Extended Universe. As one of the founding members of the Justice League in the DCEU, Cyborg was set to become a key player in the future of the franchise. Unfortunately, plans shifted when the production of Justice League ran into a sequence of unforeseen obstacles, which led to Zack Snyder's extensive blueprint for the character being dropped.

In the 2017 theatrical release of Justice League, Cyborg's connection with the Mother Boxes makes him a pivotal character to the story, as the extraterrestrial artifacts helped his father, the S.T.A.R. Labs scientist Silas Stone (Joe Morton), cybernetically recreate most of his body after a tragic accident left him on the verge of death. This procedure gave him the ability to modify his body into an unlimited variety of weapons, as well as the ability to process vast immense amounts of data from all kinds of technological devices. However, the theatrical cut of Justice League still downplays Cyborg's abilities. The movie shows that he's not powerful enough to restrain an unruly Superman (Henry Cavill) or put up a fight against the Apokoliptian New God Steppenwolf (Ciarán Hinds), though he's still depicted as the only hero who's able to handle the mystical power of the Mother Boxes. Along with most of Cyborg's origin storyJustice League took out an important part of his extraordinary feats of power.

Thankfully, the long-awaited Snyder Cut promises to do Cyborg justice. The upgraded film's trailer revealed plenty of adjustments, among which stands out a peek at one of Cyborg's deleted scenes in which he demonstrates the real extent of his abilities. Although fans will need to wait until the 2021 release of the Justice League Snyder Cut to understand its full context, the brief shot shows a pre-Cyborg Victor Stone remotely manipulating a bunch of incoming nuclear weapons with a wave of his hand. The shot probably belongs in a deleted scene where Cyborg explains his history with the Mother Boxes to the other members of the Justice League through a hologram, as evidenced by the Gotham City University jacket that he's wearing in both scenes and the apparent lack of technological enhancements in his body.

Whether the scene still stands as part of a flashback or is actually incorporated into a full-fledged action sequence, the Justice League Snyder Cut seems to finally have recognized how far-reaching Cyborg's technological enhancements really are. For him, hacking into every nuclear arsenal in the world without breaking a sweat could be just the beginning. Of course, he's still too inexperienced in both cuts of Justice League to go toe-to-toe with Superman, but his potentially godlike superpowers deserve a better depiction than the one the theatrical cut gave him. Besides, Steppenwolf's improved design also helps Cyborg due to their shared connection with the Mother Boxes. After all, being made out of one of the most powerful artifacts in the universe justifies a power level that's at least a little bit closer to that of the New Gods.

Undoubtedly, this authentic depiction of Cyborg's abilities in Zack Snyder's cut of Justice League will put him among the top metahumans that have been presented so far in the DCEU. Zack Snyder has always been especially vocal about his original plans for the character, and the Snyder Cut trailer indicates that it will emphasize his tragic backstory and his crucial role in the movie, which is supposed to affect the entirety of the franchise, including Cyborg's possible role in the Flash movie and his crucial participation in the Justice League's eventual confrontation with Darkseid. Snyder's new opportunity to flesh out the characters and plot points that the theatrical release of Justice League lacked means Cyborg will clearly enjoy a more complex interpretation and a better display of his powers.
