How Hyrule Warriors: Age of Calamity Can Improve The Original

Koei Tecmo's Hyrule Warriors was an overall well-received Zelda Spin-off, but Hyrule Warriors: Age of Calamity has the opportunity to improve upon the original and all of its additional content. The first game was ultimately an amalgamation of all things Zelda, which made it extremely entertaining for hardcore fans of the franchise to sift through, but its elements were only loosely strapped together, which made the experience feel unfocused. Age of Calamity has a far more concise and clear story, so it's headed in the right direction to fix this problem.

The story of the original Hyrule Warriors was non-canon and starred an all-new Link and Zelda who fought against a group of new original enemies. The evil witch Cia, who's the dark half of Link's ally Lana, merges multiple eras of Hyrule's history so that she can summon antagonists from previous Zelda games, such as Zant and Ghirahim. Because of the artificial way all these characters come together, its plot feels more like its simply trying to manipulate the nostalgia of Zelda fans rather than develop high-quality original content.

Age of Calamity, on the other hand has a significantly more cohesive story that fans are actually interested in hearing. A common complaint about Breath of the Wild was how most of the interesting things that happen in its plot take place 100 years before Link's quest actually begins. Throughout the adventure, players get to learn about little details here and there via flashbacks, but the game still ultimately glosses over these portions of the story. Age of Calamity's tale is entirely focused on the war against Calamity Ganon 100 years before Breath of the Wild, which is a much more grounded basis for a plot that Zelda fans will be more interested in experiencing.

From a gameplay perspective, Hyrule Warriors and Age of Calamity will likely play very similarly to each other, but this is Koei Tecmo's chance to work out the kinks in their first Zelda title. Hyrule Warriors included a series of adventure maps that worked similarly to event matches from the Super Smash Bros. games, except these events demand that players fight through these maps in order by capping them off with level requirements. These side missions are fun, but the use of a leveling system breaks their difficulty by making them impossible unless players grind for experience before playing, which simply isn't enjoyable. Age of Calamity should focus on making the level requirements of its side content more lenient so that players can experience it without the need for excessive grinding.

Age of Calamity could also improve on Hyrule Warriors by adding online multiplayer to the mix. The original game supported local co-operative play, but it couldn't be done online. Nintendo is adding this feature to its port of Super Mario 3D World in early 2021, so online multiplayer is a possibility for Age of Calamity. Regardless of how Nintendo and Koei Tecmo choose to handle this new title, Age of Calamity is lined up to be a massive hit that could blow the original Hyrule Warriors out of the water while simultaneously keeping Zelda fans occupied while they ravenously wait for Breath of the Wild 2.
