Fear The Walking Dead, spin-off and prequel to The Walking Dead, aired its fourth season in two parts: the first eight episodes starting in April 2018 and the second eight in August of that year. It's this season that marked the much-anticipated crossover between the two shows as Morgan decided to leave his group on The Walking Dead and travel to a new location to clear his head. And who should he meet but the folks from Fear the Walking Dead.
The season employed an interesting strategy with a time jump forward a few years interspersed with flashbacks to reveal the events that got them to where they were. But how did each of the 16 episodes of the show rank? Here's a look.
16 "…I Lose Myself" (Episode 16) – 6.4
In the final episode of the season, Morgan is at the center as he tries to figure out what to do in the face of being deemed a leader once again and having to make tough decisions to help his friends.
He ends up leaving Martha for dead, after almost strangling her to death in anger, and leads the group to Clayton's supply factory where they decide to continue his work and dedicate themselves to helping others.
15 "The Wrong Side of Where You Are Now" (Episode 7) – 6.7
Viewers were at the edges of their seats to see what happened to John Dorie, if the crew could take down the Vultures, and to figure out what Naomi was doing with them in the first place.
This episode saw things come to a head as the Vultures surrounded Madison with charred walkers and gasoline waiting to burst into blames around the stadium.
14 "People Like Us" (Episode 9) – 6.7
A storm hit the town where the group was staying and they were forced to fight the elements. Morgan discovered Strand drowning his sorrows in alcohol and Luciana playing vinyl records on repeat while in a sort of trance.
The "Take what you need, leave what you don't" boxes are revealed in this episode as well.
13 "Weak" (Episode 12) – 6.7
Al remained violently ill as the crew came across the SWAT truck and Martha. While a man named Quinn thought he was going to receive help, he ended up meeting Martha, who killed him and lovingly told his reanimated body that he wouldn't be weak anymore.
This is when viewers learned that Martha thought she was helping people by preventing the weak from being as such and giving them eternal life.
12 "The Code" (Episode 11) – 7.0
Truckers Wendell and Sarah were introduced along with beer maker Jim. But at the heart of this episode was the reveal of the woman at the truck stop who was seemingly a good person but clearly had something up her sleeve.
Martha revealed herself with a zombified Purvis as an evil and seemingly insane woman who would undoubtedly mean trouble for Morgan and the others.
11 "No One's Gone" (Episode 8) – 7.2
As the episode that marked the emotional death of Madison, who sacrificed her life for her children, viewers also saw how she met Althea on her journey before reuniting with her family. And Alicia found the tape and finally saw it.
The timeline flipped back and forth between present-day and the past, ending with the group in present-day eating ramen by the fire as they revealed what happened to Madison.
10 "Close Your Eyes" (Episode 10) – 7.2
As the storm got worse, Alicia had to find a safe place to wait it out. In doing so, she accidentally discovered Charlie, the young girl who killed her brother, and was forced to come to terms with the fact that Charlie was just protecting her own, just as Alicia would have done.
The two make amends, so to speak, as they realized they needed Alicia to forgive Charlie in order for them both to move on, and survive.
9 "MM 54" (Episode 14) – 7.2
Viewers finally saw Martha's backstory through flashbacks, and how she and her husband got into an accident right at the beginning of the apocalypse. While Martha begged and cried for help at the side of the road, no one would stop.
It's his death that ultimately drove her insane and put her on a mission to take anyone down who asked for help like she once did.
8 "Buried" (Episode 4) – 7.4
The group dealt with the aftermath of Nick's death and grieved his loss. And flashbacks showed the Vultures setting up camp outside of the stadium, trying to intimidate Madison and force them out so they could take over the property.
One of the most exciting scenes in the episode was Alicia and Naomi's run to the water park where they got stuck on a water slide, trying to dodge zombies.
7 "Just in Case" (Episode 6) – 7.4
Naomi took Madison and Strand to the FEMA shelter where she was before and they learned about her true story.
It's an episode that shows just how amazing John Dorie's trick-shot skills were as he shoots off Edgar's finger.
6 "Blackjack" (Episode 13) – 7.5
Strand and John are stuck on an island with seemingly no way to get off while Martha finally told Morgan that she wanted him to stop leaving the boxes on the road to help people because they only encouraged people to be weak.
Clayton is revealed, meanwhile, as Luciana finds him, though viewers don't yet know who he is.
5 "I Lose People…" (Episode 15) – 7.6
The group is still trying to find their ways to one another but Martha is watching their every move and hellbent on stopping them all.
While trapped in a hospital, surrounded by walkers, Jim made the brave decision to sacrifice himself to save everyone. But first, he radioed Sarah to pass on his top-secret beer recipe.
4 "Another Day in the Diamond" (Episode 2) – 7.7
This episode, like many others, focuses on a flashback to a previous time when Madison and the entire group were still alive and well, trying to make the baseball stadium their home. A young girl named Charlie is with them but, as fans of the show know, she turned out to be an enemy.
The episode introduced Mel and the Vultures as well as June (going by Naomi). Meanwhile, in the present-day, viewers learned that Alicia was upset because she thought Althea and friends were Vultures. But viewers didn't yet know why she was so angry and hateful towards them.
3 "Good Out Here" (Episode 3) – 8.0
Another top episode from the season, this one angered a lot of fans because it marked the death of fan-favorite character Nick. He died at the hands of Charlie, who shot him in retaliation for him killing Ennis.
It also focused on Morgan and him getting closer with members of the group, opening up more to them, and trying to help them through their issues.
2 "Laura" (Episode 5) – 8.1
John Dorie quickly became a fan favorite character so an episode entirely devoted to his story was bound to go over well with viewers. Fans learned about how he was living prior to meeting the group and the story of how he met "Laura" which turned out to actually be Naomi.
Arguably the most romantic episode in The Walking Dead universe, it flipped to the present day where viewers saw that John was laser-focused on finding Naomi.
1 "What's Your Story?" (Episode 1) – 8.3
The first episode of this season was also considered the best, likely in part due to the fact that it aired on the same night as The Walking Dead's eighth season finale. It marked the entrance of the character of Morgan following his crossover from TWD.
Viewers got to see what drove Morgan away as well as how he met John Dorie and eventually the whole group. As the episode title indicates, it's also when Althea got both Morgan and John to share their stories on camera. It ended with a bang as John, Althea, and Morgan came face-to-face with Nick, Strand, Alicia, and Luciana.
