Expanse Season 5 Theory: How Bobbie & Avasarala Become Vigilantes

Could Bobbie and Avasarala go rogue in an effort to crack a Martian conspiracy in The Expanse season 5? The Expanse made its Amazon Prime debut in 2019, and season 4 proved to be a huge turning point for both Earth's Secretary General, Chrisjen Avasarala, and former Martian marine, Bobbie Draper. Ever since The Expanse began, Avasarala has held a position of power among Earth's leadership. Even while working against her own colleagues or siding with James Holden and his Rocinante renegades, Avasarala would quietly bide her time, massage her political connections, then strike when the time was right. Although personal gain wasn't her motivation, this shrewd maneuvering soon landed Avasarala the top job at the U.N.

When Frankie Adams was introduced as Bobbie Draper in The Expanse's second season, the character typified the spirit of Mars, proudly serving her military with distinction. A brush with the Protomolecule proved to Bobbie that the political dynamic between Earth, Mars and The Belt was more nuanced than she realized. For her part in exposing Mars, Bobbie finds herself discharged from service when The Expanse season 4 begins. At a loose end, she accidentally falls in with some small-time smugglers and uncovers yet another conspiracy - Martian higher-ups selling weapons to the violent faction of Belters led by Marco Inaros. Bobbie immediately calls Avasarala, the only person she can trust, but in an awkward quirk of fate, Avasarala has just been voted out of her job.

Bobbie or Avasarala aren't likely to turn a blind eye to this potentially seismic conspiracy, so it's safe to assume that the unlikely pair will team up in order to investigate, but this mission could bring out a darker side to both characters in The Expanse season 5. For the very first time in The Expanse, Avasarala is the clear underdog in a fight. Until now, Chrisjen could wield her political muscle to get to the truth, helping to bring down the likes of Jules Pierre Mao and Sadavir Errinwright. While she no doubt still has a few useful contacts to call upon, Avasarala will be working very much outside of the law once she begins digging into the Martian government's affairs, and won't be able to hide behind her lofty title when the heat is on. Avasarala is now in the same roguish vigilante position Holden once was.

Crucially, The Expanse season 4 also ended with Chrisjen's husband distancing himself from her in one of the gentlest break-ups in history. Arjun Avasarala has always been the one to ground Chrisjen, provide perspective, and be the human voice on her shoulder. Stripped of her official political clout and without Arjun to offer a calming voice, Chrisjen Avasarala could be pushed into more inventive, morally gray methods of investigation when she and Bobbie begin their upcoming collaboration. For instance, Avasarala has always been a master manipulator, and this might be a quality she needs to rely on more heavily now she isn't Earth's top dog.

Working on the fringes might be somewhat new to Avasarala, but Bobbie already experienced that world in The Expanse season 4 during her dealings with Esai. Once a model Martian, Bobbie is now more skeptical of her planet's intentions, and showcased a meaner streak when handling her smuggler friends. Combining her strength and military mind with Avasarala's intellect could create a formidable tandem, but as seen with Cotyar, Chrisjen can sometimes push her soldiers too far. Viewers could see a desperate Avasarala leading Bobbie towards more questionable tactics when the duo begin prying into the deal between Mars and Marco Inaros, and having dedicated herself to the Martian cause only to be thrown to the wolves, Bobbie has every reason to oblige.

While neither character is going to veer into villainous territory, both Bobbie Draper and Chrisjen Avasarala have their backs against the wall taking on the Martian government, and neither are averse to fighting dirty when the need arises. An exciting consequence of this new territory is the darker path these much-loved characters could take in The Expanse season 5.
