Amidst the hubbub of the PlayStation 5 pre-order launch this week, many players felt anxious up until the moment that they secured a console, and now Amazon is letting them know that they still might not get them on release day. A select group of PlayStation fans will get the chance to pre-order the console direct from Sony, but most players are left hoping to find one in stock from another retailer.
Despite promises that Sony would give plenty of advance notice before pre-orders opened, the consoles went on sale unceremoniously just hours after their price was announced by Sony on stream. Customers rushed from retailer to retailer, and the preceding days have seen new stock trickle out to the same effect. No matter the store, PS5s are selling out in seconds, and traffic is so great it's actually crashing the websites of retailers offering pre-orders. Even if this whole fiasco is not what Sony may have intended, it certainly frames their console to onlookers as a hot ticket item worthy of the hype.
Now, it seems that even fans who managed to get a pre-order in might not get the console on launch day. Several early adopters who pre-ordered from Amazon, including Wario64, tweeted out notices they received from the retailer that their pre-orders don't necessarily guarantee that their console will arrive the day it's released, with more sharing the same message in the replies. Amazon states that this delay is due to high demand, but says it will make every effort to get the item shipped as soon as possible once it's available.
Considering the messy launch circumstances associated with this batch of pre-orders, the circumstances as to why Amazon seemingly oversold its allotment of PS5 consoles is up in the air. Amazon could have simply accepted more orders than it had consoles, knowing that it would be able to ship more in the weeks after launch, but it's possible that Sony overpromised supply to its retail partners, meaning that other non-Amazon orders might be similarly at risk.
The question of what exactly made the launch of PlayStation 5 pre-orders such a disaster may never be answered, but one thing is clear: With gaming growing every year, more people want to jump into the next generation of consoles than ever before. Next-gen consoles are complicated machinery, and meeting demand around launch has been a problem going back decades. Given that, the recent PlayStation 5 pre-order debacle may be just a preview of how hard the consoles will be to come by at launch, even with Sony promising to keep up its amplified production schedule.
