Christopher Nolan is the only director on this list who has yet to win a "Best Director" or even a "Best Picture" award and its something that baffles almost everyone who is familiar with his writing and directing style.

But his films have won in other categories, such as Inception and Dunkirk who have 4 and 3 Oscars under their name respectively.
9 Alfonso Cuarón - 10 Oscars
Mexican film director Alfonso Cuarón has won 2 Best Director Oscars in the last decade, one for his 2013 film Gravity and the other for 2018's Roma. The former, a sci-fi thriller about an astronaut stranded in space and her journey back to Earth, won a whopping 7 Oscars and also made the director Alfonso Cuarón the first Mexican filmmaker to win the Oscar for Best Director.
He also holds the record for receiving Oscar nominations in six different categories, an achievement he shares only with Walt Disney and George Clooney.
8 Damien Chazelle - 10 Oscars
Currently 35 years old, Damien Chazelle became the youngest person to win the Academy and Golden Globe Award for Best Director in 2016 for his film La La Land, a musical drama starring Emma Stone and Ryan Gosling.
The film went on to receive Oscars in 5 more categories other than Best Director, including Best Picture. His previous work, 2014's Whiplash, another drama related to music, won 3 Oscars. With 5 wins, it is also his film with the highest number of Oscars won. His latest film 1917 was also a massive critical hit, winning 3 Oscars at the 92nd Academy Awards against 10 nominations.

6 Ang Lee - 12 Oscars
Taiwanese filmmaker Ang Lee's 2013 film about a teenage shipwreck survivor stuck drifting across the Pacific Ocean on a lifeboat with a Bengal tiger, Life of Pi, might be his most famous film with 11 Oscar nominations and 4 wins (including Best Director), but it wasn't the first time the director had cleaned up at the Academy Awards.
His 2000 martial art film Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon, with the same number of Oscar wins as Life of Pi is considered one of the most influential films of its time. Other than this, his film Brokeback Mountain featuring Heath Ledger and Jake Gyllenhaal also won 3 Oscars.

Earning over $2 billion dollars worldwide, both the movies remained the highest-grossing movie of all time for many years, and Titanic also holds the record for the most number of Oscars won by a single movie (alongside 2 other movies). His film Terminator 2: Judgment Day is known among many as the ultimate action movie and also earned 4 Oscars.
1 Steven Spielberg - 32 Oscars
In sheer terms of Oscar wins, no director currently working in the industry comes even close to the achievements of Steven Spielberg. His influence on the modern-day cinema industry is undeniable, and it is no surprise that he is also the highest-grossing director of all time.
His 1975 film Jaws introduced the very concept of "summer blockbusters" and won 3 Oscars. Schindler's List and Saving Private Ryan absolutely defined what heights the war-drama genre could reach, winning 7 and 5 Oscars respectively including Best Director in both cases. 4 Oscars were earned by both Raiders of the Lost Ark and E.T., and 3 by Jurassic Park.
