Xbox Series X Actually Looks Pretty Cool In Up-Close Event Photos

The Xbox Series X, the upcoming next-gen consoles that's been compared to a gaming refrigerator, gets a more close-up - and more flattering - look thanks to a display at a German eSports arena. Both Sony and Microsoft are taking novel approaches to the design of their new consoles after an entire generation that resembled VCRs more than anything. Sony is breaking away from the black boxes for the first time in three generations with the PlayStation 5. The new system brings the curves from the PlayStation 3 into a wavy white tower with an optional bulbous protrusion that holds a disc drive.

Meanwhile, on the Microsoft side of things, the tower metaphor is even more apt. The Xbox Series X is a black monolith with subtle green accents to keep things on brand. The rumored Xbox Series S is supposedly a stout white version of the Series X, more resembling a streaming box than a full-fledged console. On both sides of the next-gen game, the designs have gone through the wringer with memes questioning the change in design ethos from the current pair of consoles. It's a regular pattern among video game enthusiasts, but some of those who got a close-up look at the Xbox Series X this weekend are now singing a different tune.

Real-world pictures of Microsoft's new console surfaced as part of an exposition at the Xperion, a German eSports arena that was hosting an event over the weekend. The model, which was confirmed to be a prototype rather than an actual console, was displayed under glass for onlookers at the event. Those who saw the box - like Twitter user architectu2 - were complimentary in their social media posts, and shared photos of what was once thought to be a mighty goliath instead sporting a manageable and slim design.

Of course, the Xbox Series X has run into more problems than design aesthetics in the months since its reveal. Halo Infinite was delayed until 2021, leaving Microsoft to pivot to a strategy highlighting the console's backward compatibility for lack of a system-selling title. Between Halo's delay and Microsoft's plan to release its biggest games for PC and Xbox One in the near future, there's legitimate reason to wonder if the Xbox Series X is heading for a disappointing launch day.

Still, for those looking for a powerful 4K gaming machine for their living room, the Xbox Series X seems like a great choice. Seeing the upgrades Xbox 360 games got on Xbox One has many anticipating what an even more powerful system could do with classics from two generations and beyond. However, the real decisions will come when both Microsoft and Sony reveal their next-gen pricing plans. Rumors have circulated around both systems, and the pricing sensitivity of the public is at an all-time high. Until the announcements are made, many in the gaming public are caught in a game of corporate chicken as we get ever closer to the Xbox's confirmed launch this November.
