What The Flash's Next Big Mystery Can Be (After Crisis)

With Crisis on Infinite Earths over, a new overarching mystery may occupy Barry Allen’s mind for the foreseeable future in The Flash. Way back in the pilot episode, viewers were made aware of Barry’s involvement in a “Crisis”. A newspaper article from the future teased that he would disappear. It was later confirmed that this headline referred to Crisis on Infinite Earths, a major event in DC Comics that encompassed dozens of superheroes.

After years of anticipation, the disaster that made Barry worry about his fate finally came to pass in the 2019-2020 Arrowverse event of the same name. After half a season of believing the Monitor’s warning that his death was necessary for the Crisis to be averted, Barry made it out alive when Earth-90’s Flash (John Wesley Shipp) sacrificed himself instead. Following the conclusion of the event, Barry dealt with the fallout of Crisis, the loss of Oliver Queen (Stephen Amell), the death of the Speed Force, and most recently, the rise of a new Mirror Master (Efrat Dor).

Some of the problems currently being faced by Team Flash, such as restoring the Speed Force and getting Iris (Candice Patton) back, are likely to be resolved early in season 7, so neither of these storylines are expected to play out over any great length of time. So if The Flash intends to deliver another major mystery to take the place of Crisis on Infinite Earths, it’ll have to be something different. One possibility for this is the Godspeed story that The Flash has been slowly building up to since the beginning of season 6. Earlier, Barry fought a white-clad speedster called Godspeed that turned out to be a robotic impostor. In the second half of the season, Barry encountered a second fake Godspeed whose goal was to attain “infinite velocity”.

Barry still doesn’t know where these fake Godspeeds are coming from or what this is all about, but outside of the two episodes where Team Flash battled them, this isn’t an issue that the team has devoted much time to solving. However, that could change in season 7, especially if The Flash elevates this storyline into a more pressing mystery. How these robotic villains are able to run at such amazing speeds without the Speed Force is a question that should concern Barry. The explanation for it – and what it’s leading to – could be bigger than Team Flash realizes. In fact, Godspeed may only be a small part of it. Godspeed could be working with a whole cult of villains that Barry will have to deal with in the near future.

Unless Godspeed and his masters are the villains of season 7, The Flash may drag out this story for a while. It could be that their plan to gain “infinite velocity” may be put on hold until Barry can build his artificial Speed Force. As time passes, the show may drop clues as to who these villains are. The Flash show may also find a way to expand the scope of the story by tying other characters and concepts to it.
