The Box Assassin Animated Short Has Serious John Wick Vibes

The Box Assassin animated short has some serious John Wick vibes. The film centers on a pizza delivery boy’s unforgettable night, in which he runs into a legendary assassin that defeats his opponents in unimaginably clever ways. Jeremy Schaefer, who wrote and directed The Box Assassin, worked on the short as his final thesis project while studying animation in college.

The result is something which fuses Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse, in tone and style, with the most thrilling of action movies. The voice cast of The Box Assassin includes Jonathan Myles, Adin Rudd, and Lou Lambert. Providing the voice of Franklin, who can’t quite believe the pizza boy’s tale, is Schaefer. The writer/director posted The Box Assassin, which hilariously details how the titular character earned his name, to his YouTube page.

Schaefer’s work is incredibly impressive, especially considering that the director relied on Kickstarter to help fund the short. The Box Assassin had 65 backers on the website, and together they pledged $3000 for the project. In addition to its visual strength, the short benefits from a creative conceit which could easily be expanded into a longer form. The pairing of the pizza boy with the nonchalant hitman also has potential, as it calls to mind the dynamic between Miles Morales and Peter B. Parker in Into the Spider-Verse. It’s easy to see how the short could lead to greater recognition for Schaefer. But, for now, we’re left to ponder the question of who would win in a fight between Baba Yaga and The Box Assassin.
