Star Wars: Doctor Aphra's Audiobook Will Differ From Dooku's

Doctor Aphra - the human female archaeologist and breakout character from Marvel's Star Wars comics - is starring in the newest audiobook original from Random House Audio. The story, written by Sarah Kuhn and performed by a full ensemble cast, adapts and expands upon Aphra's introduction into the Star Wars universe in the first volume of Star Wars: Darth Vader.

Doctor Aphra, who's full name is Chelli Lona Aphra, was created by writer Kieron Gillen and artist Salvador Larroca, as a "rogue archaeologist" and pioneer in the field of criminal xenoarchaeology.  Aphra, characterized by her blatant disregard for the law, her no-fear attitude, and lack of impulse control, was introduced to the universe when Darth Vader recruited her after the Battle of Yavin. Aphra, along with her droid companions, 0-0-0 (Triple-Zero), and BT-1 (Beetee), both feared assassin droids, worked for the Sith Lord. While working for Vader, Aphra crossed him and fell out of his favor, requiring her to fake her death, so she could continue to roam the galaxy looking for treasures.

The Doctor Aphra audiobook is the second audio production from Random House Audio and follows the first Star Wars audiobook Dooku: Jedi Lost, which told the backstory of Count Dooku, the Sith Lord from from Star Wars: Attack Of The Clones. The new audiobook, featuring Doctor Aphra, released in late July and adapts the story from the first 25-issues of Star Wars: Vader Down, and the "Rebel Jail" arc of the main Star Wars title, but tells the story from Aphra's point of view.

The new audiobook was the topic of the Comic-Con@Home Virtual PanelStar Wars Audiobooks: Doctor Aphra, moderated by audiobook producer Nick Martorelli. It included narrators Marc Thompson and Emily Woo Zeller (the voice of Doctor Aphra), author Sarah Kuhn (Heroine Complex series), and Del Rey editor Elizabeth Schaefer. Among the many topics discussed by the panel, one of the more interesting ones was that in the audiobook, large sections are told from Aphra's first-person perspective, offering listeners more insight into the character.

Martorelli began the discussion by mentioning that, while recording with Zeller, he realized that Aphra, unlike Count Dooku in the previous audiobook, was more interested in telling her own story. Kuhn, who wrote the adaptation, joked that the takeaway point was that writers are "big jerks" because they don't have to perform what they write. Kuhn agreed that, unlike Dooku, there are a lot of long monologues given by Aphra. Zeller responded that it wasn't the length of the dialogue, but more so trying to find the emotional subtext of the scene so as not to come across emotionally flat and bring the scene to life. Kuhn and Zeller agreed that Aphra is a fun character to both write and voice.

The full video of the panel is available on Comic-Con International's YouTube channel, and the audiobook is now available for purchase. Doctor Aphra's adventures continue in the second volume of her solo monthly series, Star Wars: Doctor Aphra, written by Alyssa Wong with art by Marika Cresta.
