Shazam's Most Dangerous New Villain Is His Own Father

Warning: SPOILERS for Shazam #13

Shazam #13 sees the hero badly beaten up by none other than his father. Billy finds himself in a remarkably difficult situation as Mr. Mind has taken over C.C. Batson's body and is using his mind-controlled pawn to go after his own son. Not only will this set the stage for some serious emotional turmoil, but with C.C. having gained the powers of the seventh champion, the physical turmoil is sure to prove difficult as well.

Billy's long-absent dad returned in the final pages of 2019's  Shazam #1 and gained powers in Shazam #8 when Black Adam and Dr. Sivana attempted to murder him. Only Billy gave his father the seventh and final Champion spot to save his life. But it would be revealed that Mr. Mind was controlling C.C.  in order to trick Billy into making him the Seventh Champion so he could combine and rule all seven of the Magic Lands. Once Mr. Mind revealed this, he also introduced his new team, The Monster Society, comprised of villains from all over the Magic Lands. The team serve as a good distractions for the rest of Billy's family while Shazam and Mr.Mind (as C.C.) faced off.

As "father" and son brawl, Shazam takes a brutal beating. The hero hadn't been roughed up like this by any of his villains in quite some time. The amount of punishment Mr.Mind is able to dish out is incredible. Mind has been around for a very long time but is rarely seen as a big threat, considering the fact that he's a literal worm. However, now that he has possession of an super-powered body, he could be potentially unstoppable. In issue #13 alone, he beats Billy down and reaches his goal of making the seven Magic Lands one world.

The villain does this by beating Shazam to a bloody pulp and forcing him to recite a spell from The Book of Champions that unites the worlds. The emotional beating Mind serves Billy is just as destructive as the physical beat down he gives. When Billy tells Mind to let his father go, the villain laughs and goes on to tell Billy how easy it was to manipulate him. Mind monologues how C.C. Batson is no outstanding citizenas readers see a scene of C.C. pick-pocketing a man. Mr. Mind doubles down on his mocking of Billy, saying he picked Batson's father because he knew it would be presented as a weakness for him.

Giving Billy Batson a villain that both challenges him physically and emotionally is so appealing, as the main trait of the character has always been that he is a child imbued with tremendous powers. The fact that Shazam is a teenager provides compelling stories. The turmoil that Billy has gone through in these recent issues will continue to test and push him into doing things he's never done before, such as shrinking himself to take on Mind, face to (worm) face, which is exactly what he does in the final pages of Shazam #13.
