The New Mutants is the final X-Men movie from the Fox franchise, and a new synopsis for the movie confirms one connection to a previous character. 20th Century Fox helped bring superhero movies to the forefront of pop culture in the 2000s with their X-Men franchise. Now, the mutants will likely be rebooted by Marvel Studios after Disney's acquisition of Fox. Due to multiple delays, the timing of the Disney-Fox deal makes New Mutants the last entry in the 20-year X-Men story.
Even though New Mutants is an X-Men movie and stars X-Men characters, the film will be a standalone adventure. Fox had started to find success with genre-bending superhero movies like Deadpool and Logan, and the hope was for New Mutants to launch a horror comic book franchise. The film has yet to be released, but the chances of New Mutants getting any sequels are believed to be slim since Marvel Studios now has control of the mutants. However, it has been confirmed that the movie will include one connection to the X-Men franchise.
A new synopsis for New Mutants from 20th Century Fox confirms the film will use the comic-accurate backstory for Illyana Rasputin, aka Magik (Anya Taylor-Joy), by making her the younger sister of Colossus. Magik has been put at the forefront of New Mutants' marketing as a result of Anya Taylor-Joy's blossoming career, with several parts of her comic story teased to be included. Now, the official synopsis has confirmed her ties to Colossus will be kept too by mentioning, "The younger sister of Colossus, Magik becomes encased in armor at will and wields a soulsword that amplifies her multiple superhuman and psychic abilities."
Piotr Rasputin, aka Colossus, has had a prominent role in Fox's X-Men franchise. Daniel Cudmore played him in the original X-Men trilogy and X-Men: Days of Future Past before Stefan KapiÄiÄ took over the role in the Deadpool movies. None of his previous appearances referred to his sister, so it will be intriguing to see how New Mutants makes the connection between the two characters. The movie could see Illyana namedrop Colossus or have her reference his involvement in prior events. On the other hand, there's a chance this connection will be much more subtle and is only outright addressed for the synopsis.
The possible references to Colossus in New Mutants might be one of a few explicit references to the previous movies, but there were plans to include many more. Director Josh Boone confirmed there will be a reference to Professor X, but there were plans for Storm to have a role at one point. There were also plans to film a post-credits scene that introduced a new X-Men villain for the sequel, but it was never filmed due to the Disney-Fox deal. Audiences might not get to see these connections whenever (and however) The New Mutants is released, but at least there appears to be a chance that a Colossus reference will be made.
