Google Pixel 5 Specs Leak: 6-Inch OLED Display, 90Hz Refresh Rate & More

The rate of information leaked on Google's upcoming Pixel 5 is increasing and now, following renders showing a fingerprint sensor, the latest reveals the rumored display specifications. Notably, a larger 6-inch OLED screen and a fast screen refresh rate of 90Hz. While earlier rumors suggested a truly giant size, approaching 7-inches, the 6-inch display is in line with the updates that Google has made in the past.

Google surprised the phone industry with its first Pixel phone in 2016. While the hardware was not overly impressive on paper, the software made all the difference, resulting in one of the smoothest experiences available on an Android phone at the time. Of course, the stand-out feature was the camera technology, not in terms of the sensor or lens used, but the advanced artificial intelligence that worked behind the scenes to extract greater brightness, color, and detail in quite varied circumstances. Google has continued to lead the industry in doing more with less, competing head to head with such smartphone leaders as Apple and Samsung. What the Pixel family still lacks, however, is popularity with consumers.

Google’s first Pixel phone had a tiny 5-inch display, and it has grown incrementally with each new release. The new leak from Android Central indicates the Google Pixel 5 will feature a 6-inch OLED display. This is a small increase in size from the Pixel 4 which measured 5.7 inches and places it between the Pixel 4 and 4 XL, which had a 6.3-inch screen. The Pixel 5 will match the refresh rate of the Pixel 4 repainting the display 90 times each second, making scrolling smoother, and allowing for more accurate displaying of games, and reducing lag. OLED continues to offer the best color and brightness of any display technology.

Additional leaks point to the Google Pixel using a Qualcomm Snapdragon 765G processor, a lesser spec CPU than might be expected from a Google flagship phone. However, this is rumored to be combined with 8GB of RAM and 128GB of storage. Have mobile phone chips reached a level of sophistication that simply increasing RAM is sufficient to provide a satisfying experience for the user? That happened with laptops and desktop PCs several years ago, and now many find that a modern laptop with its low-power CPU is all the power needed.

Google may be trying to hold the cost lower, and this could place its new Pixel 5 in a consumer buying gap between flagship and budget tiers. Or this may indicate some new tactic from Google by attempting to find a way to add value that goes beyond standard specifications. What else will make the Pixel 5 worth an upgrade? Perhaps even more artificial intelligence and better camera technology, especially as those are the hallmark features of the Google Pixel family.
