Frog Fractions recently got a new DLC called Hop's Iconic Hat, and as fans of the game might have suspected, it's actually more of a sequel. Frog Fractions is an indie game that's been around since 2012 as a flash browser game, and has gained cult following over the years thanks to its developer's habit of hiding new releases within other games.
Recently, a 4K remaster of Frog Fractions was released on Steam as Frog Fractions: Game of the Decade Edition. This is the original game that players will remember, as it starts off as an educational game spoof and quickly discloses that it is not a game about fractions at all, and is only sort of about frogs. Instead, players are taken on a journey that includes catching some bugs, battling in an Ace Attorney-style courtroom, and completing a text-based adventure game, and this is all before the fake end credits roll.
The DLC that was just released on Steam along with the remaster of the old game gives players a nice hat, as PC Gamer notes. However, once the player toggles the menu option to put the little beanie on the game's protagonist, Hop, the player will be asked to choose a save slot, and then will be plopped into a game that looks very much like Frog Fractions, but is not. Hop's Iconic Hat is really Frog Fractions 3, a sequel hidden inside the original game.
Technically this surprise sequel is Frog Fractions 4, for those dedicated fans counting. Frog Fractions 2 started out as a Kickstarter by developer Jim Crawford, who essentially asked people for money to make a game that players would have to find on their own. The Kickstarter campaign for Frog Fractions 2 led players to an alternate reality game that hid clues for the next game in the series inside websites, social media, and dozens of independent indie games. Frog Fractions 3 came out under a game of a different name: Glittermitten Grove. While much of this game has nothing to do with its spiritual predecessor, players can find a box that opens to Frog Fractions 3 if they follow all the clues from the ARG. This arrives at the conclusion that Hop's Iconic Hat is actually the fourth game in the convoluted series.
Frog Fractions is a wild ride, from the conception of the series to its latest DLC. Gamers are in for an absurd journey that challenges the way modern video games are structured and promoted, and the game should be a staple for any aspiring develop to study. In celebration of the release of Frog Fractions: Game of the Decade Edition, Crawford has reduced the price of the Hop's Iconic Hat DLC and Glittermitten Grove in the Frog Fractions Cinematic Universe bundle, also available on Steam.
Frog Fractions: Hop's Iconic Hat is available now on PC.
