DoorDash is now offering on-demand grocery deliveries through the smartphone app. This has not yet been implemented nationwide, but it is currently available in eleven cities across the western and midwest United States. DoorDash plans to continue expanding the service to more areas in due course.
DoorDash is a food delivery company, similar to Uber Eats and GrubHub, offering delivery from freelance drivers of orders from restaurants and eateries that have no delivery service themselves. Earlier this year, Doordash began partnering with several convenience stores, including Casey’s, 7-Eleven, Circle K, Wawa, CVS Pharmacy and Walgreens.
More recently, DoorDash announced a new partnership with grocery stores that allows customers to place an order on their app and have their groceries delivered to their home within an hour. Currently, the service is limited to California residents in the Bay Area, Los Angeles, Orange County, Sacramento, San Diego, and the Central Coast, as well as ordering from Smart & Final grocers. Individuals living in Chicago, Cincinnati, Milwaukee, Detroit, and Indianapolis can order groceries from Meijer and Fresh Thyme grocers. In the following weeks, DoorDash hopes to expand this service to more areas around the country and has a deal with Hy-Vee and Gristedes / D’agostino to deliver through their stores soon. The service hope to offer a grocery delivery option to more than 75 million people across the country in the near future.
Once DoorDash's on-demand grocery service is available in a city, it can be accessed through the same DoorDash app used to order food. DoorDash Pass members will experience the same free delivery that they receive through other orders. Furthermore, all deliveries can be contactless, allowing customers to reduce the risk of a COVID-19 transmission. Customers can also order ready to eat or ready to heat meals from local grocers through DoorDash. The company currently offer this service at Wegmans, Hy-Vee, Gelson’s, Kowalski’s, Big Y World Class Markets, Food City, Village Supermarkets, Save Mart, Lucky, Lucky California, Coborn’s, and others.
UberEats also began offering grocery delivery services during the pandemic, but its areas of service are also currently limited, as it continues to expand. These company expansions also place them in competition with other grocery delivery services, like InstaCart. This is an exciting development, particularly for users of DashPass who can now access a new service without any increase in price. DoorDash frequently offers delivery prices at less expensive rates than the competition, so it will be interesting to see how the fees stack up for this new service.
