Candyman 2020's Plot Twist Potentially Spoiled By Magazine Cover

The upcoming Candyman film may have had a major plot twist spoiled by a magazine cover. The 2020 Candyman, directed by Nia DaCosta, is described as a "spiritual sequel" to the original film series.  Tony Todd, who played Candyman in the original trilogy, will apparently reprise his role in the new film, but an early trailer sparked a theory that  Yahya Abdul-Mateen II will portray a new version of the character.

Abdul-Mateen II's Anthony McCoy is described as an artist who moves to the former site of the Cabrini-Green housing project in Chicago, which is where the Candyman legend began. In the trailer, McCoy slowly unravels as he explores the rumors and, at one point, he raises his hand to a mirror, only to see a hook reflected where his hand should be. Todd's voice is also prevalent in the trailer, perhaps as an echo inside McCoy's mind but nothing has been confirmed.

However, a new Total Film magazine cover seems to have revealed the secret. On the cover, Yahya Abdul-Mateen II appears in Candyman makeup sporting the character's signature hook, heavily implying Anthony McCoy will transform into the hook-handed slasher.

DaCosta has been careful in her wording when describing Abdul-Mateen II's role. She told Collider, "I can’t say what’s happening in the film because we want it to be a surprise, but he’s not replacing Tony Todd." However, that still leaves open the possibility of Abdul-Mateen II playing a new incarnation of the character.

At this point, all the evidence is still circumstantial, and it's not clear exactly what will happen to McCoy. However, the Candyman trailer does give us a quick shot of Abdul-Mateen II sporting makeup similar to the Total Film cover. And in the clip, Abdul-Mateen II's makeup is not nearly as extensive as it is in the magazine photoshoot, which seems to imply a slow metamorphosis.

It's pretty safe to say that Abdul-Mateen II will portray Candyman in one form or another, but it remains to be seen whether it's all in his head or if he'll take over the mantle from Todd. Candyman is scheduled to be released on October 16, 2020.
