Batwoman's Biggest Unresolved Stories Due To Ruby Rose's Exit

Ruby Rose is leaving the Arrowverse behind her as she exits Batwoman and the role of Kate Kane, a departure that now leaves multiple major storylines unresolved. The Batwoman season 1 finale ended with a number of big reveals, including a cliffhanger, which means their resolutions will need to be updated - or disregarded entirely - in season 2. After having played Bruce Wayne’s cousin since 2018, Rose announced that she was leaving the franchise as well as the role of Batwoman. While there have been reports about how Rose and the production had a challenging relationship, it became a bigger shock when it was revealed that a new person would take over Kate’s Batwoman mantle.

With the creators deciding to create a new character to lead Batwoman, Javicia Leslie was later cast as Ryan Wilder, who will become Gotham City’s new protector. Exactly how Ryan will come into the picture remains to be seen, as she is not based on a previously established DC character. While Leslie taking over the titular role will take the show into new directions, it does affect several stories that included Kate from Batwoman season 1. Ryan, currently, doesn’t have any ties to previous storylines or the remaining regular characters.

Since Kate Kane won't be killed off, it confirms that many of those plot points won’t get a proper conclusion. If Kate ever does return to the Arrowverse, it’ll likely not be someone else in the role rather than Rose reprising the character. Exactly what will go down in the Batwoman season 2 premiere, as Kate gets replaced by Ryan, remains to be seen. But to find a way to wrap up that many storylines in one episode is unrealistic. These are the biggest unresolved stories in Batwoman that gets affected by Rose’s departure from the series and the Arrowverse.

The central plot of Batwoman since the pilot has been the ongoing war between Kate and her villainous twin sister Alice. Similarly to the comics, Alice is Batwoman's main antagonist and a complicated one, to say the least. For an entire season, viewers got to see Kate’s constant struggle in dealing with Alice and the damage the villain puts the city through. After believing that she had lost her sister for good all those years ago, Kate discovered that Beth was alive this entire time, but also had gone insane because of her gruesome origin story, challenged the leading hero.

As the final episodes began solidifying Kate giving up on trying saving Beth, it took their war to the next level. But with Kate no longer being in the series, viewers will now never get to see who actually manages to bring the other one over to their side. Alice may, in turn, be sidelined to make way for another villain.

One of the big set-ups in the Batwoman season 1 finale was Tommy Elliot a.k.a. Hush finally getting his new face, which became a bigger twist than what fans were expecting. Given his obsession with Bruce Wayne, Alice made Tommy look like the missing famous playboy billionaire, revealing the casting of Warren Christie. Not only was it done as a way to finally get a face to Batman in the Arrowverse, but it was also to help serve Alice’s new plan.

Committed to wanting to kill Batwoman by getting the Kryptonite from Kate, this would've become an intense storyline when Kate thinks Bruce is back before realizing that it’s Tommy in disguise. Even if Hush is still in Batwoman season 2 and poses as her cousin for a number of episodes, there won’t be that payoff moment between Kate and “Bruce” that the finale set up in the last scene of the episode 20.

One of Batwoman’s ongoing obstacles was another personal one, as her father Jacob Kane and The Crows had become more determined to stop her. The season finale culminated with Jacob’s big desire to stop the Bat-vigilante once and for all without knowing his daughter was under the cowl. Because of Kate’s exit, that storyline will never be able to progress to the point when Jacob eventually discovers that his daughter is Gotham’s new hero. Even if they flash-forward and he has already found out that Kate is Batwoman, it’ll be lackluster to see him react and struggle with it without her being in the picture. To not even get the inevitable moment when Kate unmasks herself and reveals to her father that she is Batwoman is a massive disappointment, since it’d have taken Jacob’s role on the show to new levels.

While Bruce left Gotham City years ago, Kate expanded the Bat-Family by taking on his mantle while also bringing new blood into his legacy. But throughout the entire season, it was never hinted at whether or not Bruce, from wherever he is at, was observing what his cousin was up to in Gotham City. As the Arrowverse revealed their Dark Knight, it set up the possibility of the real Bruce Wayne coming back at some point. Especially now that Hush is posing as him, which is something Bruce would certainly find out eventually. But it would also allow viewers to see the relationship between the two cousins, including Bruce chiming in on what Kate has been doing in his absence. Whether Bruce returns or not, with Rose leaving Batwoman, it puts that unresolved plot on even further ice.

Even if Bruce does end up engaging with Ryan Wilder as she becomes the new Batwoman, he could easily - through exposition - give his thoughts on Kate taking on his mantle while he was gone. But not getting to see Kate and Bruce together becomes a major letdown, especially as Christie’s casting was a surprise. With all the Batman aspects that the Arrowverse has had so far, not seeing the Dark Knight and the original Batwoman together is awkward. As Leslie’s Ryan Wilder takes over the mantle, it will move Batwoman into new adventures while, unfortunately, never get a proper conclusion to Kate’s Arrowverse arc as Rose leaves the franchise for good.
