Battletoads Achievements Include Nightmarish Bike Level Challenge

The Battletoads remake is right around the corner, and it includes a masochistic challenge revolving around the infamously difficult Turbo Tunnel bike stage from the original game. First announced at Microsoft's E3 2018 conference, Battletoads is the long-awaited return of Rare's classic '90s beat 'em up franchise. Originally modeled after the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, Zitz, Rash, and Pimple forged their own identity in several releases across arcades and home console of the era. Despite enjoying a guest stint in Killer Instinct, the Toads haven't been seen in their own game for 26 years.

Indie studio Dlala Studios, which most recently released multiplayer brawler Overruled, is the primary team on the project, with Rare serving as a consultant. The remake features new designs for the characters, which gives them a more cartoony vibe to match their over the top antics and abilities. The game is still a 2D side-scrolling brawler, although it features will once against feature a sequence where the Toads hop onto hoverbikes to take on the Turbo Tunnel. Instead of a side-scrolling view, this section is now behind the back, but the controller-throwing difficulty could still remain intact.

Rare lead designer Paul Collins recently broke down all of the achievements for the Battletoads remake for Xbox Wire. Along with completing levels and smashing through enemies, the most notable accomplishment involves the aforementioned Turbo Tunnel. The 20-point "Live and Let Drive" achievement challenges players to stay alive on their bikes for 300 seconds in three-player co-op. That means that all three participants in a full round of Battletoads must survive what promises to be an NES-hard level challenge. The original Turbo Tunnel level was so notoriously difficult that most players never got past it, making this achievement sound pretty imposing, to say the least. It's the type of achievement that doesn't come around too often, and it's fitting to find it in this kind of retro revival.

Looking at the rest of the achievements listed, Battletoads seems to be a full-fledged follow-up to Rare's original releases. The achievements confirm that the game has over 75 collectibles throughout its campaign, which is 17 levels of beat 'em up action. That's quite a bit longer than most modern releases in the genre, including this year's Streets of Rage 4. Considering that the game has been in development for over two years, that is maybe to be expected, and it will be interesting to see how players respond to the full-length brawler.

Alongside Microsoft Flight SimulatorBattletoads looks to be one of the last Microsoft first-party releases before the shift from Xbox One to Xbox Series X. Neither release has been a focus for the publisher, which is reeling from the recent delay of Halo Infinite to 2021. Still, the games will fit nicely onto Xbox Game Pass in perpetuity, which seems to be a big part of Microsft's strategy going forward. A decent length beat 'em up is the perfect pick up and play experience with friends, so having Battletoads available whenever is a great bonus to subscribers.
