Avatar: The Last Airbender - 5 Times Sokka Was The Best Character (& 5 Times It Was Uncle Iroh)

At this point, it’s almost redundant to say the words “best character” and “Avatar” in the same sentence, because it seems like every character was pretty great in one way or another. Avatar: The Last Airbender has every character necessary to make a good show. The brooding one, the practical one, the funny ones, the rebellious one, and so forth. In most cases, those attributes are combined into one character. This is evident throughout each character's introduction, especially with Sokka and Uncle Iroh.

They both defended their loved ones, but also served as major comic relief during dangerous or somber moments. Sometimes it’d seem like they weren’t taking things seriously, or that they weren’t being smart for whatever situation they were in, but they proved themselves when things got rough. Here are 10 times that Sokka and Uncle Iroh were the best characters in the show.

10 Sokka: When He Was The Voice Of Reason

Things turned out great in the end, of course, but Katara had no business releasing Aang from the ice so quickly. He definitely could have turned out to be an evil force that ruined the world they lived in.

Sokka was right to be apprehensive of immediately removing some glowing creature from a block of ice without alerting their parents or any member of their tribe. Then again, they traveled the world unsupervised on a flying bison, so maybe that wasn’t really important.

9 Uncle Iroh: When He Let Zuko Be Alone To Find Himself

It was necessary for Zuko to go off on his own and try to figure himself out. However, Iroh was never too far behind making sure that he was alright. He didn’t make his presence known and allowed Zuko to make his own decisions and feel the repercussions of his choices.

Iroh always defended Zuko and did what he thought would benefit him in the long run. Even when he had to tell him that he was wrong or fight against him, Iroh was always thinking about Zuko’s future.

8 Sokka: When He Learned To Fight In The Fire Nation

This was the aftermath of his insecurity about his contribution to the group. He felt like everyone else was doing things that were better than what he was doing because he had no bending abilities.

Instead of dwelling on it for a long time without doing anything, he sought instruction from a Fire Nation master. Sokka was able to do something to relieve his worries and avoided the toxic attitudes that can result from focusing on self-loathing thoughts.

7 Uncle Iroh: When He When He Defended The Moon Spirit

Iroh always seemed to be on whichever side that he felt was doing the right thing. Having major respect and reverence for the moon spirits, he went against Admiral Zhao and attacked after he killed one of them.

He stood with Katara, Sokka, and Yue after Tui was killed. He could have easily left them there and went to help Zuko defeat Zhao, but he stayed to help the transfer of Princess Yue into the moon spirit.

6 Sokka: When He Explained Katara’s Character To Toph

After Toph and Katara had another one of their lively quarrels, it was Sokka who explained what kind of person his sister truly was. He told Toph about how she meant well even though her maternal tendencies could be annoying sometimes.

Sokka was able to bridge the gap between Toph and Katara and end their small feud. The fact that their reconciliation indirectly led to them getting captured is neither here nor there...at least not at this moment.

5 Uncle Iroh: When He Gave Toph Advice

When Toph made a stormy exit after her fight with Katara, Iroh found her alone and helped her clear some of the thoughts in her head. She was angry with how people treated her and had difficulty being a part of a team.

He expressed to her the advantages of letting people who care help her sometimes. His advice helped Toph adjust to life outside of her parents' overbearing grip and understand that people weren’t always looking down on her.

4 Sokka: Sparky Sparky Boom Man

Sokka was often the comic relief during the show, especially during a dangerous or tense moment. A great example of this is when he named the assassin that was hunting them “Sparky Sparky Boom Man.”

The name itself doesn't result in slapping your knee, tilting your head back laughter, but when they began to refer to him as such while running away or engaging in battle, it allowed for some humor to slip through the cracks of an intense situation. Sokka’s character was reliable for silly but innovative humor.

3 Uncle Iroh: When He Fought Zuko & Azula

Although Iroh loved his nephew immensely, he didn’t stand by and allow him to do terrible things. After Azula attacked Aang while he was entering the Avatar State, Iroh protected him from further danger. He fought both his niece and nephew so that Katara could escape with a defenseless Aang in her arms.

He was captured and put into prison after his actions, but this moment just goes to show how little Iroh cared for choosing a side. If something was fundamentally wrong, he would not stand for it.

2 Sokka: When He Designed The Submarines

Despite his fear of not contributing much, Sokka was more than just a joke or a strict schedule. He was a pretty good inventor as well, and it was first made noticeable after the group visited the Northern Air Temple.

Not only did he help improve the War Balloon that was instrumental in their counterattack on the Fire Nation, but he also designed the submarines that gained them entry into Fire Nation territory. Although his designs appeared to be messy and somewhat childlike, they resulted in epic underwater machines.

1 Uncle Iroh: When He Fought The Fire Nation

This is a moment that everyone saw coming. There wasn’t any way that the show would end without Iroh cementing his position as one who would always defend and protect, as the Grand Lotus. There were many times that he displayed his loyalty to truth over greed and power, and this final stand is the finishing touch.

He fought against whoever was trying to do unnecessary harm, even though it sometimes meant going against his family and his nation. With the help of the White Lotus, he was triumphant.
