Due to the unforeseen Uplay server issues during yesterday’s Ubisoft Forward event, Watch Dogs 2 will still be available to download for free even a day after the event concluded. Ubisoft’s big livestream showcase offered exciting looks at several highly anticipated next-generation titles, including a Far Cry 6 trailer starring Giancarlo Esposito's villainous Anton Castillo and a post-show video of Assassin’s Creed: Valhalla’s previously unseen gameplay.
However, things hit a snag in regards to Ubisoft's free offer of 2016’s Watch Dogs 2 to anyone who logged in to their Uplay account during the Ubisoft Forward show’s hour-long runtime. As a result of the sheer number of users participating, Uplay’s servers crashed, preventing anyone from actually getting their free copy of the game. Fans soon took to social media to express their displeasure at this unfortunate turn of events, but luckily it seems Ubisoft is now giving everyone a second chance.
As of this writing, Ubisoft’s website is still offering up Watch Dogs 2 free of charge to anyone who registers their Uplay account. All a user has to do log in to their account, click on the “Redeem Rewards” link on the Ubisoft Forward page, then wait for their free copy of the game to appear in their libraries. The amount of time it takes may vary by user, as some have reported that their copy of Watch Dogs 2 has yet to appear following the redeeming process.
The free offer of Watch Dogs 2 comes after the latest game in the long-running spy-hacker franchise, Watch Dogs Legion, was featured heavily at the Ubisoft Forward event. The game was heralded by a striking CGI short film by former Spider-Man: Into The Spider-Verse art director Alberto Mielgo, leading to a deep look at Watch Dogs Legion’s branching paths and multiple playable characters that can be recruited into a player's army (including Grandma!), which is tasked with liberating a futuristic London from a corrupt government regime. Finally, Legion’s long-awaited release date of October 29 was revealed, following a coronavirus-related delay earlier this year.
In the meantime, it’s nice to know that Ubisoft is letting players partake in their free offer of Watch Dogs 2 after it was met with such disastrous technical difficulties during the Ubisoft Forward event yesterday. Hopefully, the extended promotion will leave more players happy with their free copy of Watch Dogs 2, just like the publisher had intended when they announced the giveaway.
