Ubisoft’s patch notes for its latest Assassin’s Creed Odyssey update contain a nice surprise for players - a sneak peak at a Viking armor set coming to the game that looks like it would be right at home in Valhalla. The final piece of DLC for Odyssey released one year ago today, but Ubisoft has continued to keep the game up to date with small patches, usually consisting of little more than bug fixes.
Combining the classic Assassin’s Creed formula with even more of the RPG elements that have been working their way into the last couple installments of the series, Assassin’s Creed Odyssey was a massive hit upon its release in 2018. Screen Rant gave it 4/5 stars and its reviews from most outlets were extremely positive. It received two separate DLC trilogies after launch, one focusing on the ancient assassins that set the whole series in motion and the other set around the lost city of Atlantis. Like Assassin’s Creed Origins, Odyssey also received a Discovery mode that turns the game into something of an interactive history lesson.
Even before Odyssey’s final DLC was out in the wild, fans were turning their attention toward the next entry in the Assassin’s Creed series. Once rumored to be set in Rome, the game that would eventually be known as Assassin’s Creed Valhalla ended up being leaked in The Division 2, another of Ubisoft’s games. Now, Assassin’s Creed Odyssey is getting its own tribute to Valhalla. In a recent set of patch notes, a Ubisoft community manager on Reddit revealed the Northern Traveler’s Set, a new Viking-themed armor pack coming to Odyssey. Ubisoft hasn’t said when the new gear set will arrive, saying only that it would reveal more details “in the near future.”
It might seem like a strange time to add new items to Assassin’s Creed Odyssey, but it’s the perfect time to keep building up the hype for Assassin’s Creed Valhalla. The Viking-centric next entry in the Assassin’s Creed franchise is set to come out in just four months for current consoles, and presumably around the same time for next-gen. While it looks like a much more action-oriented sequel than even the combat-heavy Odyssey, it will also be bringing back crowd stealth, a staple of the series’ earliest installments.
A new armor set might not be enough to justify another playthrough of Assassin’s Creed Odyssey, but it could be worth popping back in for a few quick missions. With Assassin’s Creed Valhalla coming out in just a few months, it couldn’t hurt to get used to the look of that heavy Viking armor.
