The Sandman Adaptation Hoping to Resume Filming in Europe This October

David S. Goyer has revealed both the Sandman TV series and Asimov: Foundation hope to begin filming again in October. The coronavirus pandemic has brought the entertainment sector to a halt. From productions to screenings, no part of Hollywood has been unaffected, and that's been particularly visible at this year's San Diego Comic-Con. With large gatherings no longer safe, Comic-Con 2020 has been reinvented as Comic-Con@Home.

This gives the whole world a chance to experience the kind of panels and interviews that are usually only available to attendees. One good example is an interview with experienced Hollywood writer David S. Goyer, on the subject of adapting comics for the big screen. Goyer is certainly experienced in this area, having worked on everything from Blade to Man of Steel, and during the interview, he also reflected on a script he'd prepared for a never-made Doctor Strange movie (he was fired when he refused to listen to a studio exec who told him there was too much magic in his script).

Towards the end of the Comic-Con@Home interview, Goyer responds to questions on the production of some projects he's currently working on - namely Asimov: Foundation and the Netflix Sandman TV series. According to Goyer, both projects are currently hoping to start shooting again in Europe in October, with Goyer flying out at the end of September. He was actually in Europe shooting Asimov: Foundation during the early stages of the pandemic, and swiftly got a sense of the chaos about to engulf the United States; they stopped shooting on March 12, and returned to the United States before the travel ban. Goyer notes that a lot of the cast and crew suffered from coronavirus, and since then, he's suffered a personal tragedy, with his mother recently passing away from COVID-related issues. "It's not a hypothetical in my family," he observes sadly.

Goyer's remarks offer a fascinating window into the logistical nightmares studios and networks are currently having to live with. Each country is in a different phase of the pandemic, meaning projects will only be able to resume filming when it is safe in those specific locations. Worse still, the situation can change at speed, because any area could potentially experience another outbreak. Any decisions will be based in part on the current situation, and modeling of trends. Thus Goyer can say he hopes to begin filming again in Europe in October, but this can only be considered provisional. Meanwhile, detailed guidelines are being established to try to maintain social distancing during production.

The effects of the coronavirus pandemic will clearly be felt for a long time. A delayed production naturally leads to a delayed release. Interestingly, though, it's possible the final shows will benefit in a strange way from all these delays. During the interview, Goyer noted he's been working on both Sandman and Asimov: Foundation throughout the lockdown, so the scripts could well be more polished as a result.
