Stranger Things: How Old Hopper Is In Each Season | Screen Rant

Jim Hopper endured a lot of trauma by the time he was introduced as Hawkins' Chief of Police in Stranger Things. Played by David Harbour, the hardened character has emerged as a fan-favorite since the Netflix series debuted in 2016. So how old is Hopper in the fictional universe?

Other than his job as the chief in the quiet town of Hawkins, Indiana, Hopper didn't have much responsibility in his life. His only child passed away and he was divorced from his wife. Hopper was distracted by his troubled life when he became involved in the disappearance of Will Byers (Noah Schnapp) and the arrival of the mysterious girl named Eleven (Millie Bobby Brown) with telekinetic powers. By Stranger Things season 2, Hopper served as Eleven's sole protector and was even deeper into the mysteries surrounding the Upside Down and the Mind Flayer's hold on Hawkins. After adopting Eleven, he had another chance at fatherhood, but the ongoing threats were far from over.

Much of Hopper's past was left a secret until the character came into focus with the official tie-in novel, Stranger Things: Darkness on the Edge of Town. The book unearthed the fact that Hopper worked as a homicide detective in New York City after the death of his daughter, Sarah. At one point, the story mentioned that Hopper was 35 years during the summer of 1977. With that detail, the Stranger Things Expanded Universe calculated Hopper's birth year to be 1942. And so, that puts Hopper in his 40s throughout the series.

Hopper resided in New York City until 1979 before moving back to his hometown. It was November 1983 in Stranger Things season 1, making the Chief of Police around the age of 41. He was still suffering from his past, turning to alcohol as the only way to cope. The events of Will's disappearance and the mystery surrounding Eleven, the Demogorgon, and the Upside Down opened the man's eyes a bit. With the responsibility brought by taking care of Eleven in season 2, Hopper cleaned up his act. The season was set in October 1984, bringing him to the age of 42. Season 3 took place less than a year later, in the summer of 1985. So Hopper could have been as old as 43 when he sacrificed himself to close the Gate under the Starcourt Mall.

Previously presumed dead, Hopper is alive and well according to the Stranger Things season 4 teaser. He's currently being held as a prisoner in Russia. It's presumed the forthcoming season takes place just months after the events of season 3. If this is the case, Hopper will still be in his early or mid-40s. Either way, there's no immediate age portrayal issues in sight considering Harbour is 45 years old so the age representation is almost spot on.
