Ready Player One Sequel Novel Releasing In November | Screen Rant

Penguin Random House has confirmed that Ready Player Two, the sequel to Ernest Cline's novel Ready Player One, will be releasing this November. Cline published Ready Player One in 2011, the success of which allowed him to become a full-time author. He has since published Armada (2015), which is also currently being adapted into a film, though little information has been released. A fanfiction, titled "Lacero," was written by fellow author Andy Weir (The Martian) and published in the 2016 edition of Cline's novel. The author has said Weir's story is canon in the fictional universe he created.

Ready Player One features a dystopian world in which many of the inhabitants escape to a fictional, virtual reality world called the OASIS. It quickly became one of the best-selling and best known novels ever, earning itself a spot on America's 100 Most-Loved Books list by PBS' The Great American Read. Shortly after Ready Player One's release, Steven Spielberg began to adapt the text into a film, which ended up earning $583 million worldwide. Cline has discussed the possibility of a sequel for a while, revealing he was working on one back in 2017.

Deadline confirmed that Ballantine Books, a subsidiary of Penguin Random House, will be releasing the book on November 24 across the United States, with details regarding the international dates coming soon. It is, however, expected to be published in more than the 37 different languages and 58 countries in which Ready Player One was released. Unfortunately, plot details for Ready Player Two aren't known at this time. The sequel is currently available for pre-order on all relevant shopping sites.

The novel will launch just before Thanksgiving, giving fans both old and new something to look forward at the end of an extraordinarily tough year. The original novel was described by many critics as a geek's fantasy, with many aspects of pop culture making their way into both the Ready Player One book and film. The sequel is likely to expand on this, as well as the characters and world readers were introduced to when the book first released.

As far as a sequel film goes, it's possible Steven Spielberg will also direct the adaptation of Ready Player Two, though after the first took nearly a decade to develop, it's anyone's guess when the movie could drop. After Ready Player One's release, Olivia Cooke, who portrayed the character of Art3mis/Samantha Cook, confirmed she did sign a contract to reprise her role in any upcoming sequels, not knowing when or if that would happen. It is likely that Tye Sheridan, who portrayed the protagonist Parzival/Wade Watts will reprise his role as well. Right now, it is unclear if plot details for Ready Player Two will be revealed ahead of the novel's release, but is safe to assume fans will have to wait until this holiday season to discover the fate of these characters.
